Bangkok Floods Force Thousands Into Shelters After Days of Heavy Rain

Thousands of residents in Bangkok were forced to leave their homes and move into temporary shelters after several days of heavy rain caused widespread flooding across Thailand’s capital, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and international news reports.

Thousands Forced to Leave Their Homes

Floodwaters spread across several low-lying parts of Bangkok over the weekend, inundating homes, roads, markets and businesses.

Nearly 4,900 people had been evacuated to temporary shelters, while around 52,000 households were affected by the flooding, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

The city established more than 200 temporary shelters as residents searched for safe places to stay while water levels remained high.

More Than 330 Millimetres of Rain

Thailand’s weather agency reported that some parts of Bangkok received more than 330 millimetres of rain between September 24 and September 27.

The prolonged rainfall caused severe disruption to transportation, with residents forced to wade through floodwaters and, in some areas, use small boats to move around.

Some residents also reported difficulties buying food and other essential supplies as stores in flooded areas began running low on stock.

Residents Try to Protect Their Belongings

As floodwaters entered homes, residents moved furniture, electrical appliances and other belongings to higher places.

Some families remained in their homes while attempting to protect their property, while others moved to schools and other buildings converted into temporary shelters.

At one shelter in eastern Bangkok, around 1,000 displaced residents were reported to have spent the night on benches and classroom floors.

Authorities Continue Flood Response

Bangkok authorities continued drainage operations while monitoring water levels in canals and other waterways.

City officials advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel in areas affected by flooding. Hundreds of schools were also expected to remain closed as authorities assessed conditions.

The Thai Meteorological Department said rain was expected to ease, with conditions potentially improving from Monday.

Flooding Affects Daily Life Across the Capital

The flooding has disrupted daily life for thousands of Bangkok residents, with some people unable to return home and others beginning the difficult process of cleaning and repairing their properties.

Authorities continued to monitor the situation as drainage work progressed and residents remained in temporary shelters.
