Exiled Russian Artist Known for Anti-Putin Cartoons Shot Dead in Poland
Russian artist Robert Kuzovkov, who was known by his artistic name Semyon Skrepetsky and had gained attention for his satirical cartoons criticizing President Vladimir Putin, was shot and killed in the eastern Polish town of Biała Podlaska.
The 44-year-old artist was reportedly attacked on a Monday morning, with Polish authorities confirming that an investigation into his murder was underway. Two Belarusian nationals were detained in connection with the killing, although authorities had not established a motive at the time of the initial reports.
Artist Known for Political Satire
Skrepetsky became known for provocative caricatures targeting Putin, Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov and other prominent figures associated with the Russian government. He reportedly left Russia in 2021, citing fears of political persecution.
In the days before his death, the artist had participated in a protest outside the Russian Embassy in Berlin. Images from the demonstration showed him carrying artwork depicting Soviet leader Joseph Stalin feeding a baby Putin.
His work had made him a recognizable figure among critics of the Russian government, particularly through his use of political satire and visual commentary.
Investigation Into the Killing
According to Polish prosecutors, the artist was shot several times at close range. Authorities said the attacker fled the scene, while two Belarusian nationals were later detained in the area near the Belarusian consulate.
Investigators have not yet established who ordered the killing or what motivated the attack. Officials have emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding the murder.
The death has drawn attention to the security concerns facing Russian dissidents and critics living abroad. However, no official evidence has established a connection between the killing and the Russian government.
