Woman Finds Mysterious Drawing in Her 1834 Family Home and Uncovers a Hidden Story

A woman restoring her family’s nearly 200-year-old home made an unexpected discovery in the attic that led her to uncover a forgotten chapter of her family’s history.

A Name and a Mysterious Drawing

Sommer Duran, 29, has been documenting the restoration of her family’s 1834 home. While exploring the attic, she repeatedly came across the name of a great-great-aunt she had never known.

The name appeared alongside old dates, drawings and other markings left behind by previous generations. One particular drawing caught Duran’s attention because it appeared next to her relative’s name.

Curious about the woman behind the name, Duran began researching her family’s records instead of treating the discovery as simply an old piece of graffiti.

Research Reveals a Tragic Family History

Duran searched census records, marriage and death records, old photographs and newspaper archives to learn more about her great-great-aunt.

Her research revealed that the relative had married and died only about two months later. According to historical records Duran found, her death was recorded as a homicide and occurred on Halloween.

The discovery changed the way Duran viewed the mysterious drawing, although she said she could not determine exactly when it was made or what the person who drew it intended.

The House Holds More Family Secrets

The attic was not the only place where Duran and her husband discovered traces of the past.

During the restoration, they found old photographs, historical documents, original furniture, preserved food and other objects connected to earlier generations of the family.

Among the more unusual discoveries were animal skeletons and a bottle containing spiders. The couple also found old jars containing what appeared to be remnants of food and other materials from decades ago.

Preserving a Nearly 200-Year-Old Home

Duran and her husband are working to preserve as much of the home’s original character as possible while making the property suitable for modern family life.

The house was built by one of Duran’s ancestors in 1834 and has remained connected to her family for generations. The couple hopes their children will eventually grow up surrounded by the same features and stories that connected earlier generations to the property.

For Duran, the restoration has become more than a home renovation. Each discovery has provided another connection to relatives she never met and encouraged her to document the stories hidden inside the old house.

A Family History Still Being Uncovered

Duran’s research into her great-great-aunt is still continuing, and some questions about the mysterious attic drawing remain unanswered.
