What Happened to Nolan Wells? Friends Speak as Investigation Continues

The investigation into the death of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells continues as authorities examine witness accounts, digital evidence and events surrounding his disappearance during a Fourth of July boating trip.

Wells was reported missing after he failed to return from Horn Island, a barrier island off the Mississippi coast. His body was recovered from the water near the island on July 6. Authorities have continued investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Friends Have Been Interviewed
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter previously confirmed that the three friends who traveled to Horn Island with Wells had been interviewed by investigators.

The sheriff’s office said it had spoken with more than 60 witnesses as investigators worked to reconstruct what happened during the July 4 gathering. Authorities have also asked people who were on the island to provide photographs, videos and other information.

One of Wells’ friends, Tracestin Shepherd, publicly disputed claims circulating online about a video from the gathering.

Shepherd told ABC News that the voice heard during an altercation in the video was his, not Wells’. He said the confrontation involved him and another man and that Wells was not part of the altercation.

Shepherd also said Wells remained on the island after some members of the group left, telling friends he had met a girl and planned to return on another boat. Authorities have been working to establish a timeline of Wells’ final hours.

FBI Examines Digital Evidence
The FBI has also become involved in the investigation.

Sheriff Ledbetter told WLOX that the FBI was assisting with the examination of digital evidence collected during the investigation. The agency said separately that it was addressing interstate threats made against people connected to the case.

The FBI’s involvement does not by itself establish that a crime occurred. Officials have not publicly announced a suspect in Wells’ death.

Questions Surround Wells’ Final Hours
Wells’ family has raised questions about what happened after he remained on Horn Island.

His cellphone was recovered separately, and the family previously raised concerns about messages they believed had been deleted. The family later agreed to work with the local district attorney’s office to inspect the phone as part of the investigation.

An independent autopsy commissioned by Wells’ family was later reported as inconclusive. The forensic pathologist listed the cause of death as undetermined, while noting that further investigation was needed. Official state autopsy and toxicology results were still pending in reporting from July.

Authorities have previously said they did not suspect foul play, while continuing to investigate the circumstances of Wells’ death.

Investigation Continues
The case has generated significant attention online, with several people connected to the investigation reporting threats.

In July, the FBI confirmed it was addressing interstate threats involving individuals connected to the matter. More recently, federal prosecutors have alleged that a man, Edward James Porter, made threats against a potential witness and his family. A federal judge ordered Porter to remain in custody without bond following an emergency hearing. The allegations concern threats connected to the broader investigation and do not establish responsibility for Wells’ death.

Investigators continue to examine witness statements and digital evidence as they work to establish a complete account of Wells’ final hours.

No public finding has established exactly what happened to Wells before his body was recovered.
