Lovay Williams Remembered at Emotional Funeral After Tragic Death in New York City

Hundreds of family members, friends, and community supporters gathered in Harlem on September 19 to say goodbye to 27-year-old Lovay Williams, a young mother whose life was tragically cut short earlier this month.

Williams was found unconscious and unresponsive inside her Washington Heights apartment on September 6 after a relative requested a wellness check. Police said she had suffered trauma to her face and neck and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her young daughter was inside the apartment when officers arrived.

Authorities are investigating the death as a domestic violence-related case. Tiliek Thompson, 41, was arrested after turning himself in to police and has been charged in connection with Williams’ death. The charges include second-degree murder, first-degree strangulation, assault, and child endangerment.

Thompson pleaded not guilty. His attorney has urged people not to rush to judgment while the case moves through the courts. Police and prosecutors have not publicly disclosed a specific motive for the killing.

At Williams’ funeral at Canaan Baptist Church in Harlem, mourners remembered her with an emotional display of love and support. Her casket was transported to the church in a white horse-drawn carriage, creating a solemn scene as family and friends gathered to honor her life.

Green filled the church and surrounding crowd because it was Williams’ favorite color. Some mourners also wore shirts bearing her photograph and the words “Forever 27,” reflecting the lasting impact she had on those who knew her.

Williams’ daughter attended the service with the support of relatives. Family members said they were committed to helping the young girl move forward after losing her mother. During the service, she was escorted to say a final goodbye to Williams.

Friends remembered Williams as kind, caring, and someone who often put other people before herself. Her grandfather, José Chango Alvarez, spoke of his grief while saying he hoped Williams was finally at peace.

At the end of the funeral, doves were released outside the church as mourners gathered to remember Williams and offer their final farewell. The crowd also expressed its love for her as her body was carried away from the church.

Thompson remains in custody as the criminal case continues. The charges against him are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
