Mother and Three Children Rescued After Floodwaters Enter New Mexico Home

A mother and her three children were rescued from their home in Sunland Park, New Mexico, after heavy overnight rain caused floodwaters to enter the property early Wednesday morning.

The family, identified by local media as Michelle and her three children, began noticing water entering their home at around 4 a.m. on September 23. The Sunland Park Fire Department was called shortly afterward and responded to the flooded residence.

Firefighters were able to safely evacuate the mother and all three children from the house. The Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance to the family after they were removed from the flooded property.

The rescue was part of a busy morning for the Sunland Park Fire Department. Officials said crews responded to four rescue calls, including two involving vehicles, as heavy rainfall caused flooding in the area.

Fire Chief Daniel Medrano said residents should leave their homes as soon as flooding begins rather than waiting for water levels to rise. Even relatively shallow water can create dangerous conditions for residents and emergency responders.

The department also warned drivers to avoid roads covered by floodwater. Medrano said vehicles can quickly become disabled in standing or moving water, creating additional risks for both motorists and firefighters attempting to reach people in need.

The family’s home was located near Carlos Aguirre Court and Riverview Court, where firefighters responded to two separate flooded residences that morning.

No injuries were reported in the initial reports about the family, and authorities did not release the children’s ages or additional personal information.

The incident serves as another reminder of how quickly heavy rainfall can create dangerous conditions for families inside their own homes. In this case, firefighters reached the family and brought the mother and three children to safety before the situation became more serious.

Local emergency officials continue to advise residents in flood-prone areas to monitor weather warnings and evacuate early when authorities recommend leaving.
