An 11-year-old boy remains in critical condition after being shot in the face and neck at a home in Norwest, in Sydney’s north-west, on Monday afternoon.

Police were called to the property on Fairway Drive at about 5pm after reports of a shooting. The child was taken to hospital with serious injuries and remains in critical condition.

Investigators are examining whether people who were inside the home at the time had possible links to organised crime. NSW Police Superintendent Naomi Moore said several individuals at the property were already known to police and their alleged associations with organised crime were being considered as part of the investigation.

An 18-year-old man, Isaac Bechara, has been charged with concealing a serious indictable offence. He appeared at Blacktown Local Court on Tuesday, where bail was formally refused. His case has been adjourned until next month.

Two other 18-year-old men were questioned by police and later released. A 43-year-old woman was also at the property, while another person who was believed to have been present has not yet been located.

Police said some witnesses have not been cooperating with investigators, while several people reportedly left the property before officers arrived. Detectives are continuing efforts to locate and interview them.

Authorities have not yet recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting. Police initially said there was no evidence indicating the incident was connected to tensions involving organised crime, but investigators are now examining that possibility.

Superintendent Moore said police had previously interacted with some occupants of the property and that their potential links to organised crime were being assessed. She also said the boy’s mother was with him in hospital and was understandably distressed.

The shooting has drawn concern from NSW officials. Premier Chris Minns described the incident as deeply distressing and highlighted the danger posed by firearms, particularly when innocent people become victims of gun violence.

Police are continuing their investigation and are appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen suspicious activity around the Norwest property.
