THE COWBOY’S PROMISE – Part 1 — The Marriage Deal

THE COWBOY’S PROMISE

Chapter 1 — The Marriage Deal

The summer drought had turned the fields around Willow Creek Ranch into a sea of cracked earth.

For twenty-six-year-old Clara Bennett, every dry blade of grass felt like another piece of her childhood disappearing.

Her father’s ranch had belonged to their family for three generations. But after two failed harvests, mounting debts, and a bank threatening foreclosure, there was almost nothing left to save.

Then one evening, a black pickup stopped outside their farmhouse.

The man who stepped out was Ethan Cole, owner of the neighboring Silver Creek Ranch—the largest cattle operation in the county.

Tall, quiet, and dressed in a faded denim shirt, Ethan had a reputation for being a man who never smiled and never made a promise he couldn’t keep.

He placed a folder on the kitchen table.

“I can pay your father’s debt,” he said.

Clara stared at him.

“What do you want in return?”

Ethan’s expression didn’t change.

“Marry me.”

The room became silent.

Clara almost laughed.

“You’re serious?”

“My grandfather left a condition in his will. If I don’t marry before the end of the year, a portion of Silver Creek will go to a business partner I don’t trust.”

“And you think marrying me solves that?”

“Yes.”

He pushed a contract toward her.

“It will be a marriage in name only. You will have your own room. Your own money. Your own life. In return, you become my wife for one year.”

Clara looked toward her father.

He was sitting quietly, unable to meet her eyes.

She knew what this meant.

Without Ethan’s money, Willow Creek would be gone.

The next morning, Clara signed.

Their wedding was small.

There were no flowers, no romantic vows, and no kiss.

Only two signatures and a cold handshake.

When Clara arrived at Silver Creek Ranch as Ethan’s wife, she expected a mansion.

Instead, she found endless grasslands, wooden fences, horses, cattle, and a weathered farmhouse overlooking the valley.

“This is your home now,” Ethan said.

Clara looked at him.

“For one year.”

“For one year.”

Neither knew that those words would eventually become the hardest promise either of them had ever made.
