Nearly 60 Years Later, a DNA Test Brings a Father and Son Together
For nearly six decades, Michael Goessling knew he had been adopted. What he did not know was that his biological father was one of the most recognizable voices in American music.
Goessling, who grew up in the St. Louis area, discovered the extraordinary connection after a previously unknown half-brother took a 23andMe DNA test. The test identified Goessling as his half-brother and opened a path to the family he had never known.
The discovery eventually led Goessling to his biological mother, whom he met in person on his 58th birthday. He was then introduced to his biological father, who initially identified himself simply as Mike.
During their first phone conversation, Goessling asked what his father did for a living. The answer was that he was a musician who was preparing to perform in St. Louis.
Goessling began putting the clues together. A quick search of the concert schedule made him realize that the man on the phone could be Michael McDonald, the five-time Grammy-winning singer best known for his work with the Doobie Brothers and his solo career.
“Are you Michael McDonald?” Goessling asked.
McDonald confirmed that he was.

The story began in the 1960s, when McDonald and Goessling’s biological mother were both teenagers. They had a child at a very young age and ultimately placed him for adoption.
Goessling was raised by Paul and Kay Goessling, whom he credits with giving him a happy childhood. McDonald has also praised the couple, saying they were the people who gave his son the life he could not have provided at that age.
For McDonald and Goessling’s birth mother, the question of what had happened to their son had remained for decades. Learning that he had grown up well brought McDonald a sense of relief.
The father and son eventually met face to face. Their first meeting ended in an emotional embrace, followed by the realization that the reunion had created an entirely new family connection.
McDonald discovered that Goessling had children of his own, making him a grandfather for the first time through the son he had spent decades wondering about.
For Goessling, the reunion finally answered questions that had followed him throughout his life. For McDonald, a DNA match transformed a decades-old uncertainty into a relationship that had seemed impossible for most of his life.
The story is a striking example of how modern DNA testing can uncover family connections separated by generations — and how, sometimes, a single unexpected match can change an entire family story.
