World Teachers’ Day 2026 Highlights the Changing Role of Teachers

Teachers around the world are being recognised today as World Teachers’ Day marks its 60th anniversary, with UNESCO highlighting the important role educators continue to play in shaping the future.

The international day is held every year on October 5. In 2026, it marks six decades since the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers.

This year’s theme is “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.” The focus is on the challenges teachers face and the support they need to continue their work effectively.

According to UNESCO, teachers are working in an environment that is changing rapidly. Digital technology, climate change, migration, displacement and the growing need for inclusion are creating new demands on the profession.

The organisation says teachers also face challenges involving workload, working conditions, professional support and recognition. These issues can affect how effectively educators are able to carry out their work.

A global celebration is taking place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris on October 5, bringing together teachers, education experts, young people and other members of the education community.

The event includes discussions about the future of the teaching profession as well as the presentation of the UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development.

UNESCO says World Teachers’ Day is not only an opportunity to celebrate educators, but also a moment to consider how teachers can receive the recognition and support needed to help students learn and develop.

Six decades after the original international recommendation was adopted, the message remains relevant as teachers around the world adapt to a rapidly changing education landscape.
