Baby Born With His Organs Outside His Belly Undergoes Remarkable Surgery at Just 14 Months Old
When Riley and Alberto Ayala learned they were expecting a baby boy, they imagined the ordinary joys of welcoming a newborn. But a routine ultrasound at 20 weeks revealed something they never expected: their son’s abdominal wall had not developed normally, leaving some of his internal organs growing outside his belly.
Their son, Hendrix, would enter the world with a rare birth defect known as giant omphalocele.
A Shocking Discovery Before Birth
During pregnancy, doctors explained that Hendrix had a significant opening in his abdominal wall. Instead of developing entirely inside his abdomen, some of his organs were contained within a protective sac protruding from his body.
The diagnosis was frightening for his parents, who suddenly faced the reality that their newborn would require specialized medical care immediately after delivery.
54 Days in Intensive Care
After Hendrix was born, he spent 54 days in the neonatal intensive care unit at MercyOne Children’s Hospital in Iowa.
His medical team carefully monitored the large abdominal sac while waiting for protective skin to develop over it.
Once his condition was stable enough, Hendrix was finally allowed to go home, although his abdomen still required protective wrapping.
His parents learned to care for their little boy while knowing that a major surgical challenge remained ahead.

Doctors Initially Considered Waiting Years
Repairing a giant omphalocele is particularly complicated because a baby’s abdominal cavity may not have enough space to accommodate the organs safely.
Hendrix’s surgeon, Dr. Ulises Garza Serna, initially considered delaying definitive surgery until the boy was four or five years old.
However, an alternative technique offered the possibility of correcting the defect much sooner.
An Innovative Treatment Changed Everything
Doctors proposed using Botox injections to relax and lengthen Hendrix’s abdominal wall muscles, creating additional space for the organs to return to their proper position.
His parents agreed to the approach.
Within four weeks of treatment, doctors observed that the abdominal defect was becoming smaller. A second round of injections followed.
The medical team was eventually able to close Hendrix’s abdominal wall successfully when he was just 14 months old.
According to MercyOne, Hendrix became one of the first babies in Iowa to undergo this innovative type of repair.
Finally, A Chance to Enjoy Childhood
On November 15, 2025, Hendrix was discharged from the hospital following his treatment.
His mother shared that he was thriving and gradually achieving important developmental milestones.
Although additional procedures may be necessary as he grows, the successful repair has given Hendrix greater freedom to move, develop and experience childhood.
For Riley and Alberto, the journey from a frightening prenatal diagnosis to seeing their little boy recover has been extraordinary.
And for Hendrix, the large abdominal defect that once shaped his earliest days no longer defines what his future can hold.
