Baby Spent 333 Days in the Hospital Waiting for a New Heart — Now She’s Finally Living the Childhood Her Parents Dreamed Of
When Olivia and Albert Gellis welcomed their daughter Irie on September 11, 2023, they believed they were bringing a healthy baby girl into the world. Her home birth had been uncomplicated, and nothing seemed unusual at first.
But within 24 hours, Olivia sensed that something was terribly wrong.
What followed was an extraordinary medical journey involving 333 days in the hospital, four open-heart surgeries, a life-threatening infection and a desperate wait for a donor heart.
A Devastating Diagnosis Just Hours After Birth
Trusting her instincts, Olivia took her newborn daughter to the emergency room.
Doctors discovered that Irie had hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a rare congenital condition in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped.
The diagnosis changed everything.
Her parents were eventually told that their options included hospice care or finding another medical center willing to accept Irie’s complicated case and pursue a heart transplant.
UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida, agreed to take her.
Olivia and Albert immediately relocated their lives to remain close to their daughter.
Three Months Before Her Parents Could Hold Her
As Irie’s condition remained critical, her family watched her endure intensive medical treatment while waiting for a suitable donor heart.
She became the first pediatric patient in Florida to receive a Berlin Heart EXCOR under the device’s investigational approval process, helping support her circulation while she awaited transplantation.
Her parents stayed beside her throughout the hospitalization, taking turns sleeping in her hospital room while also caring for their older daughter, Faith.
One of the most heartbreaking milestones came when Olivia was finally able to hold Irie for the first time, approximately three months into her hospital stay.
It took five medical staff members to help make that moment possible.
The Phone Call That Changed Everything
On Irie’s six-month birthday, her family received the news they had desperately hoped for: a donor heart had become available.
On March 12, 2024, Irie underwent her heart transplant.
For Olivia and Albert, the moment brought overwhelming gratitude, relief and sadness for the donor family whose loss had made their daughter’s second chance possible.
But the family’s relief was short-lived.
Just one week after the transplant, Irie developed a severe fungal infection caused by Aspergillus.
Her condition became critical once again, and doctors faced an exceptionally difficult battle to save her life.
Four Heart Surgeries, 19 Chest Tubes and 333 Days
Throughout her hospitalization, Irie endured four open-heart surgeries, eight cardiac catheterization procedures, 19 chest tubes and approximately four months of intubation.
Her family continued to hope that one day they would finally be able to carry their daughter outside the hospital doors.
On August 12, 2024, that day arrived.
After 333 days of hospitalization, Irie was discharged and returned home with her family.
For the first time, ordinary childhood experiences were no longer distant dreams.
From Fighting for Her Life to Dancing in the Living Room
In a 2026 interview with PEOPLE, Olivia shared that Irie, now two years old, was thriving.
Although she still required medication twice daily and regular blood tests, her life had transformed dramatically.
She enjoyed singing, dancing, playing with her older sister and exploring playgrounds.
In June 2026, Irie also became the youngest participant at the National Transplant Games in Denver.
Inspired by their experience, Olivia and Albert established The Heartful Voyage, a nonprofit organization helping families remain close to loved ones receiving extended hospital care.
For the Gellis family, every ordinary moment now carries extraordinary meaning.
The baby girl they once feared they might never bring home is finally experiencing the childhood they dreamed of giving her.
