Bangkok Floodwaters Recede After Torrential Rain, Leaving Residents Counting Their Losses

Bangkok, Thailand — September 27, 2026

Floodwaters began receding across parts of Bangkok on Sunday after torrential rain caused severe flooding in neighborhoods across the Thai capital, leaving residents dealing with damaged homes, disrupted transport and lost income.

Nearly 300 millimeters (12 inches) of rain fell across Bangkok over a 48-hour period, according to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. Major roads were flooded, with some vehicles left partly submerged.

Residents Struggle With Rising Water

Arita Sanpoka, 33, lives in one of the affected communities. She said floodwater inside her home had reached waist height and that almost everything inside had been damaged.

Two of her neighbors, both in their 80s, were still trapped inside their home because they were unable to get downstairs.

Power was also cut on the ground floor of Arita’s home, while the bathroom became unusable as the water continued to rise.

Thousands Seek Temporary Shelter

The flooding affected neighborhoods throughout Bangkok, forcing some residents to wade through deep water to reach essential supplies.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said 233 temporary shelters had been prepared, with around 4,200 people using the facilities.

Authorities continued pumping water from major canals and assisting residents in areas where flooding remained severe.

Flooding Also Disrupted People’s Livelihoods

Rachthanichporn Leeput, 37, said she had to walk between 2 and 3 kilometers through floodwater after her neighborhood was rapidly inundated on Friday evening.

Rachthanichporn works as a delivery rider, but the flooding disrupted her income. She said she had been walking through the water to buy supplies and resell them in an effort to make up for lost earnings.

“The water rose very fast,” she said, describing how many families were unable to prepare before the flooding reached their homes.

More Rain Remains Possible

Although rainfall had eased by Sunday, water levels in several major canals remained high as water continued flowing in from surrounding areas.

Thailand’s weather agency forecast thunderstorms and isolated heavy rain for Monday, meaning some flooded areas could continue to face difficult conditions.

Authorities are continuing drainage operations and assisting residents while communities begin assessing the damage caused by the unusually heavy rainfall.
