BORN WITH A GROWING MASS BEHIND HER EAR, THIS LITTLE GIRL CARRIED A 280-GRAM TUMOR UNTIL SURGERY CHANGED HER LIFE
When Armella was born, her parents noticed a mass behind her ear. At first, they hoped it could be treated, but their family’s financial difficulties made specialist care difficult to access. As the little girl grew, so did the mass. Eventually, it became so heavy that she struggled to hold her head upright. For more than two years, her family searched for a solution. Then, a hospital ship arrived in Madagascar, bringing the possibility of surgery and a new beginning.
A Mass That Grew Alongside Her
Armella was born in Madagascar with a mass behind her ear. For her mother, Caessah, what should have been a joyful beginning quickly became a source of worry.
Caessah feared that her daughter might face rejection or unkind treatment as she grew older. The family wanted to find medical help, but the cost of treatment was beyond their means.
With assistance from their pastor, Judicael, the family eventually managed to have Armella examined by a doctor when she was around six months old. The doctor believed the mass could be removed through surgery, but requested a CT scan before proceeding.
Unfortunately, the family could not afford the scan. Their hopes of arranging an operation were put on hold, leaving them with few options as they watched their daughter’s condition continue to develop.
When Treatment Seemed Out of Reach
Over the following two years, the mass behind Armella’s ear continued to grow. What had initially been a frightening discovery became a physical burden for the little girl.
According to Mercy Ships, the increasing weight caused Armella to tilt her head toward the left. As the mass grew larger, it became increasingly difficult for her to hold her head upright.
Her parents remained concerned about both her physical comfort and the challenges she might face as she grew older. They wanted their daughter to have the opportunity to attend school, play with other children and enjoy childhood without carrying such a heavy burden.
But without the money needed for further medical assessment and surgery, the family struggled to find a way forward.

A Hospital Ship Brought New Hope
Hope returned when Armella’s family learned that the Africa Mercy, a hospital ship operated by the international medical charity Mercy Ships, was returning to Madagascar to provide free surgical care.
For families who cannot afford specialist treatment, access to the ship’s medical services can offer an opportunity that might otherwise remain out of reach.
Armella was brought for an assessment by the Mercy Ships team. Her case was evaluated, and she was able to receive the operation her family had hoped for since the mass was first discovered.
Volunteer maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Manjit Dhillon led the procedure to remove the growth. The operation required careful work in the area behind the ear, where surgeons must consider the surrounding tissues and important anatomical structures.
After years of uncertainty, Armella’s family finally had a chance to see the mass removed and to imagine a different future for their daughter.
The Operation Removed a 280-Gram Tumor
The surgical team successfully removed the mass behind Armella’s ear. According to Dr. Dhillon, the tumor weighed approximately 280 grams, comparable to the weight of a large grapefruit.
For a child who was only two years old, that was a substantial weight to carry. The size of the mass helps explain why Armella had struggled to keep her head upright as it continued to grow.
Removing the tumor meant more than changing her appearance. It also offered the possibility of greater comfort and improved ability to hold her head in a more natural position.
Mercy Ships reported that after surgery, Armella was able to lift her head and look toward the future with renewed hope. Her recovery also brought relief to her mother, who had shared the worry and uncertainty surrounding the condition since her daughter’s birth.
A New Chapter for Armella and Her Family
For Caessah, seeing her daughter receive treatment brought an enormous emotional release after years of worry. The family had struggled to afford the care she needed, and the arrival of the hospital ship provided an opportunity they had not been able to secure on their own.
Armella’s father, Justin, also reflected on how the operation could improve his daughter’s future. The family had worried about how other children might treat her and whether the mass would create difficulties when she began school.
Her story highlights the importance of access to specialist surgical care for children living with conditions that may be treatable but remain out of reach because of financial barriers.
Armella’s experience should not be taken to mean that every mass behind the ear has the same cause or can be treated in the same way. The exact diagnosis and appropriate treatment depend on medical assessment. In her case, Mercy Ships documented the removal of the mass and the positive change in her ability to hold her head upright.
After more than two years of uncertainty, Armella and her family could look forward to the future with greater hope. The operation removed a heavy physical burden and gave the little girl a new opportunity to grow, play and experience childhood.
