BORN WITHOUT A NOSE, BABY ELI FACED A RARE MEDICAL CONDITION — BUT HIS LITTLE SMILE TOUCHED HEARTS AROUND THE WORLD

When Brandi McGlathery gave birth to her son Eli Thompson on March 4, 2015, she immediately noticed something unusual about her newborn baby.

Eli had been born without a nose.

The little boy from Alabama had an extremely rare condition known as complete congenital arhinia, in which the external nose and internal nasal structures fail to develop before birth.

His diagnosis came as a shock to his family. But what followed was a deeply personal journey of medical care, difficult decisions and precious childhood moments.

A Diagnosis His Mother Never Expected

Brandi’s pregnancy had not revealed the condition, and she first noticed Eli’s facial difference when he was placed on her chest after delivery.

Doctors subsequently confirmed that he had been born without a nose, nasal passages or sinus cavities.

Although Eli initially breathed through his mouth, his medical team needed to establish a safer way for him to breathe, particularly during feeding.

At just five days old, he underwent a tracheostomy, a procedure that creates an opening in the neck to support breathing.

Learning to Care for a Very Special Baby

Before Eli could leave the hospital, his family needed to learn how to manage his medical equipment and respond to emergencies.

They received training in tracheostomy care and CPR.

On March 30, 2015, after spending his first weeks receiving medical attention, Eli finally went home.

For Brandi, bringing her little boy home was an important milestone.

She also wanted people to understand that his unusual appearance did not define everything about him.

The Baby Who Became Known Around the World

As photographs of Eli began circulating online, his story attracted international attention.

People were curious about his exceptionally rare condition, but his family wanted the public to see the happy little boy behind the medical diagnosis.

As Eli grew, he developed a reputation for smiling, interacting with people and greeting them with enthusiastic fist bumps.

His family also reported that he was learning to communicate through baby sign language.

He became affectionately known as a miracle baby, and his journey inspired messages of support from people around the world.

A Future His Family Had Hoped For

Because of his condition, Eli required ongoing specialist care.

His family had discussed the possibility of facial reconstruction when he was older, rather than pursuing unnecessary cosmetic procedures during infancy.

For his mother, protecting his health and allowing him to enjoy childhood remained the priorities.

Despite his medical challenges, Eli continued to grow and share memorable moments with the people who loved him.

A Heartbreaking Goodbye at Just Two Years Old

On June 3, 2017, Eli died following a medical emergency. He was just two years old.

His father, Jeremy Finch, confirmed the heartbreaking news publicly the following day.

The precise circumstances surrounding his death were not fully disclosed in initial news reports.

His passing brought an outpouring of condolences from people who had followed his journey since birth.

For Eli’s family, his life was never simply about a rare medical condition.

He was their beloved little boy, remembered for his cheerful personality, affectionate gestures and the joy he brought into their lives.

His two short years left memories that his family would carry far beyond his childhood.
