Broadway Actor Quentin Nguyen-Duy Faces Family Tragedy as Sibling Is Charged in Ohio Double Murder

An emerging Broadway actor is mourning the deaths of his father and stepmother after the couple were found shot dead inside their home in Oberlin, Ohio. The actor’s sibling has been arrested and charged in connection with the killings.
Quentin Nguyen-Duy, 28, was preparing for his Broadway debut in A Few Good Men at Lincoln Center Theater when the tragedy unfolded. His father, Pipo Nguyen-Duy, 64, was a respected professor of studio art and photography at Oberlin College. His stepmother, Tran Thi Phong, 56, was also found dead at the family home on October 28, 2026.
Police discovered the victims during a welfare check after officers had been investigating a vehicle fire near the college. Authorities said both had suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
The person charged in the case is Asia Nguyen-Duy, 31, who is Pipo’s child and Phong’s stepchild. Court records indicate that Asia previously used the name Daniel Jones. At the court hearing, Asia requested gender-neutral pronouns and the name Asia Nguyen-Duy.
Prosecutors told the court that Asia allegedly approached a resident in the neighborhood and asked them to record a video. In the recording, prosecutors said, Asia spoke about escaping a cult and stated that everything had been done independently and that they accepted responsibility.
According to the prosecutor, Asia also allegedly told police that they had killed their family and directed officers to the home. Authorities have not publicly established a motive.
Asia faces six counts of murder, four counts of felonious assault and one count of tampering with evidence. A judge set bond at $3 million, and Asia remains in custody. The case is expected to proceed to a grand jury.
Pipo Nguyen-Duy had taught at Oberlin College since 1998. Originally from Vietnam, he immigrated to the United States in 1975 and went on to become an internationally recognized photographer and Guggenheim Fellowship recipient.

Oberlin College remembered him as a cherished teacher, artist and colleague whose mentorship had touched many students and members of the campus community.
Quentin has not publicly commented on the deaths. His mother, Élan Chardin Gombart, asked for privacy for the grieving families and urged that coverage be handled with compassion.
The investigation and court proceedings are ongoing. Asia Nguyen-Duy has been charged but is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
