Bronx Daycare Worker Pleads Guilty After Fentanyl Exposure Killed 1-Year-Old Boy

A former daycare worker in the Bronx has pleaded guilty in a case involving the death of a 1-year-old child who was exposed to fentanyl at a childcare facility. The tragedy also raised concerns about the safety of other children who were present at the daycare.
The case centered on a daycare in the Bronx, New York, where toddler Nicholas Dominici died in September 2023 after being exposed to fentanyl. Several other children also became ill and required medical attention.
Investigators discovered that fentanyl had been stored beneath the floor of the daycare, according to prosecutors. Authorities alleged that the children were exposed to the powerful synthetic opioid while spending time at the facility.
Daycare worker Grei Mendez pleaded guilty in connection with the case. The facility’s operator, who was also involved in the criminal proceedings, faced allegations related to the children’s exposure to the drug.

Prosecutors said the investigation uncovered evidence that the daycare had been used to store narcotics. The case prompted serious questions about how dangerous substances were allowed to be present in an environment caring for infants and toddlers.
The death of Nicholas devastated his family and drew widespread attention to the risks posed by fentanyl, a highly potent opioid that can cause fatal poisoning even in very small amounts.

The criminal proceedings marked a major development in the case, as authorities pursued accountability for the child’s death and the danger faced by the other children.
