Cat Reunited With Family Six Years After Vanishing in Car Crash

A Scottish family has been reunited with their beloved cat six years after she disappeared in a serious car crash.

Pandora, a black cat owned by Mary and Billy Bowie, escaped from their vehicle after the family was involved in a crash in Perthshire in 2020. The family had been moving from England back to Scotland at the time.

Billy was driving a van carrying Pandora when the accident happened near Errol, Perthshire. The crash badly damaged the vehicle, and Pandora’s carrier was thrown from the van.

When the family realised Pandora was missing, they immediately began searching the surrounding area. They returned to the crash site several times and posted messages in local Facebook groups after receiving reports of possible sightings.

But despite their efforts, Pandora could not be found.

The family eventually had to continue their journey to their new home in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire. They never stopped hoping that Pandora might somehow survive and be found one day.

That moment finally came in 2026.

A woman contacted the animal charity Cats Protection after noticing a black cat repeatedly trying to enter her home. Volunteer Fiona Morrison visited the property and quickly realised the animal appeared to be a stray.

Morrison gave the cat some food and scanned her for a microchip.

The scan revealed something remarkable: the cat was Pandora.

Even more surprising was the address attached to the microchip. It was in Fraserburgh — hundreds of kilometres from where Pandora had disappeared after the crash.

The charity contacted the Bowie family with the news.

Mary was celebrating her 62nd birthday on August 9 when she received the phone call telling her that Pandora had been found. She described it as the “biggest and best” birthday surprise.

A few days later, Mary and Billy travelled to collect Pandora.

According to the family, Pandora immediately responded when they called her name. She also appeared to remember her grandson, with whom she had shared a close relationship before disappearing.

The family believes Pandora may have survived by finding food and shelter in the area around the crash site before eventually making her way elsewhere.

After six years away, she is now settling back into life with the Bowies.

Mary said the reunion had been emotional for everyone involved and thanked Morrison and the woman who first contacted Cats Protection for helping bring Pandora home.

The case also highlights the importance of microchipping pets and keeping contact information up to date. Without Pandora’s microchip, identifying her after six years away would have been far more difficult.

For the Bowie family, a painful chapter that began with a devastating road accident has finally ended with Pandora back where she belongs.
