Madeleine McCann Suspect Reveals He Was Just 150 Yards Away the Night She Disappeared

Christian Brueckner, the German man identified by authorities as the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, has revealed new details about where he says he was on the night the three-year-old British girl vanished in Portugal in 2007.

Madeleine disappeared on May 3, 2007, from the Praia da Luz resort in Portugal while on holiday with her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, and her younger twin siblings. Nearly two decades later, she has never been found.

In a recent interview with the Mail on Sunday, Brueckner said he was approximately 150 yards, or about 137 meters, from the resort where the McCann family was staying. He claimed he had been on a nearby beach selling drugs that night and had brought marijuana into Portugal after traveling from Spain.

Brueckner also claimed that Portuguese police stopped him three times that evening while officers were searching the area following Madeleine’s disappearance. According to his account, police did not search his vehicle, which he said contained drugs.

He described trying to leave Praia da Luz after seeing police activity and checkpoints in the area. Brueckner said he had previously remained silent about his whereabouts because he feared investigators would try to blame him for Madeleine’s disappearance.

The account represents the first time Brueckner has publicly described his alleged activities and whereabouts on the night Madeleine disappeared. He continues to deny having any involvement in the girl’s disappearance.

German authorities publicly identified Brueckner as the prime suspect in 2020. Prosecutors have said they believe he was responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance and suspected death, but he has never been charged in connection with the case. His presence near the resort, even if accurately described, does not by itself establish that he had anything to do with Madeleine’s disappearance.

Brueckner’s account also comes as investigators continue to pursue the case with German, Portuguese and British authorities involved. The Metropolitan Police has previously confirmed that Brueckner remains a suspect in its own investigation, while the investigation continues to examine viable lines of inquiry.

For Madeleine’s family, the disappearance remains unresolved. The latest comments from Brueckner add another account of what he says he was doing that night—but they do not provide an official explanation for what happened to the missing child.

Until investigators establish evidence connecting Brueckner to Madeleine’s disappearance, his claims about his whereabouts remain his own account rather than a verified explanation of the events of May 3, 2007.
