Newly released videos show the moment two Minneapolis police officers were shot while responding to a deadly attack at an apartment building where a gunman had killed two people and wounded several others.

The footage, released by the City of Minneapolis, provides a detailed view of the September 2 shooting and shows officers moving through the building as they attempted to secure the scene and protect residents who remained trapped inside. Newly released 911 call transcripts also capture the fear and confusion among victims and residents as they waited for help.

Authorities said Carlton Johnson killed two of his neighbors and wounded five other people, including two police officers, an ex-girlfriend and two building employees. Johnson was later fatally shot by police.

In the released video, officers can be seen approaching a victim lying on the floor of a hallway when Johnson suddenly appears from behind a corner and raises a handgun. He opens fire, striking Officer Joseph Michnowski.

Michnowski runs away from the scene as additional gunshots are heard. He then reports over his radio that the shooter is on the ninth floor and that he has been hit.

Other officers, separated from Michnowski, can be heard calling out to ask whether he is safe.

Moments later, Officer Yahye Mahmed Ahmed is seen standing at a stairwell landing and pointing his weapon toward the hallway. More gunshots are heard before yellow smoke fills the doorway and officers retreat down the stairs.

Ahmed then tells his colleagues that he has also been hit.

The attack began when Johnson shot and wounded a woman believed to be the mother of his child, according to Drew Evans, superintendent of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The woman’s child was not injured.

A series of emergency calls began shortly after 4:30 p.m. One wounded woman told a 911 dispatcher that she had been shot in the legs and could not move. She also told the dispatcher that her child was with her.

In another call, a woman who worked in the building’s office said she was hiding inside a storage room because she believed Johnson was still in the lobby.

The woman told the dispatcher that she did not feel safe and would not leave the room until she knew police had arrived.

After shooting and injuring two building employees, Johnson took an elevator to the ninth floor, where he killed two residents. Police later shot and killed Johnson.

Evans said investigators had not determined whether Johnson specifically targeted the two residents or encountered them while moving through the building.

The shooting occurred amid previous concerns about Johnson’s behavior. Building owners had been attempting to evict him, while residents, court records and law enforcement officials said he had threatened neighbors and warned that he planned to shoot people.

At least one person had sought a restraining order against Johnson. Police also investigated him in June after he was accused of displaying a weapon, but the county attorney’s office ultimately decided not to file charges.

The newly released videos and emergency call records provide additional details about the response and the experiences of those caught inside the building, while questions remain about Johnson’s actions and what led to the deadly confrontation.
