Dan Abrams to Lead Investigation Discovery Special Exploring the Luigi Mangione Case

The arrest of Luigi Mangione in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson quickly became one of the most closely watched criminal cases in the United States. Now, Investigation Discovery is preparing its own documentary special to examine the questions surrounding the case and the man accused of the killing.
Announced in December 2024, the one-hour program was given the working title Who Is Luigi Mangione? and was scheduled to premiere in February 2025. Television journalist and Law & Crime founder Dan Abrams is leading the project.
According to Investigation Discovery, the special will revisit the circumstances surrounding Mangione’s arrest and explore the theories investigators and commentators have raised about what may have led to the alleged crime.
The production is also expected to feature experts, industry insiders and people familiar with Mangione. It aims to examine his background, the questions surrounding his state of mind and the events that preceded his arrest.
A case that captured national attention
Brian Thompson was shot and killed outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2024. Five days later, Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania, following a nationwide search.
The case generated intense public discussion, extending far beyond the criminal investigation. Mangione’s background, the allegations against him and the online reaction to his arrest became subjects of widespread debate.
Some social media users expressed support for Mangione, while others condemned the killing and emphasized the loss suffered by Thompson’s family.
The Investigation Discovery special is being produced by Wheelhouse’s Twist Media in partnership with Law & Crime. Abrams is serving as an executive producer.
By bringing together reporting, expert perspectives and accounts from people connected to the case, the program seeks to explore the
unanswered questions that emerged after Mangione’s arrest.
The documentary announcement came amid growing interest from filmmakers and television networks in producing projects about the case and its wider social impact.
