Colin Farrell Opens Up About His Son’s Rare Neurological Condition and the Challenges Facing Their Family

Hollywood actor Colin Farrell has spoken publicly about his eldest son James and the rare genetic condition that has shaped much of his life, sharing an emotional perspective on fatherhood, disability and the importance of treating every individual with dignity.
James, whom Farrell shares with former partner Kim Bordenave, was diagnosed with Angelman syndrome when he was around two and a half years old. The rare neurogenetic disorder affects the nervous system and can cause developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, severe speech difficulties and problems with movement and balance.
Farrell first discussed James’ diagnosis in detail in a 2024 interview with PEOPLE. He explained that his son is nonverbal and has faced challenges throughout his development, but emphasized how proud he is of the progress James has made.
One memory that has stayed with the actor is the moment James took his first steps shortly before his fourth birthday. Farrell recalled being overwhelmed with emotion after previously being told that his son might never walk.
“I’m proud of him every day,” the actor said, describing James as someone who has worked incredibly hard throughout his life.
A father’s concern about life after childhood
Farrell has also highlighted the difficulties families can face when children with intellectual disabilities become adults.
He explained that many support systems, including special education services and other safeguards, can become less accessible when a young person reaches the age of 21. Families may then find themselves struggling to secure the assistance their adult children still need.
In response, Farrell established the Colin Farrell Foundation in 2024. The organization aims to improve opportunities and support for people with intellectual disabilities through education, advocacy and programs designed to help individuals and their families.
The actor has repeatedly emphasized that he wants James to be treated with kindness and respect, rather than defined by his diagnosis.
James appears in a new documentary
In October 2026, Farrell offered another rare glimpse into his family life through the trailer for The Slightest Touch. The documentary follows the actor and his longtime friend Emma Fogarty, a disability rights advocate who lives with epidermolysis bullosa, as they prepare for the Dublin Marathon.
The trailer includes a touching moment in which Farrell embraces James at home, offering viewers a glimpse of their relationship.
The documentary is scheduled to premiere on November 25, 2026, on HBO Max.

For Farrell, speaking about his son has never been simply about sharing a personal story. It has also been an opportunity to draw attention to the needs of families raising children with intellectual disabilities, particularly when those children transition into adulthood.
His message remains clear: James deserves to be seen, respected and included, just like anyone else.
