Minnesota Man Jumps Onto Runaway School Bus to Save 19 Children — and Credits ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ for Staying Calm

A Minnesota man has been praised for his quick thinking after jumping onto a moving school bus carrying 19 students when its driver appeared to suffer a medical emergency. His unexpected source of inspiration? The television medical drama Grey’s Anatomy.

Ebro Ahmed, 27, was outside his family’s convenience store in Saint Paul on October 19, 2026, when he noticed a school bus rolling down the street with its doors open and warning lights flashing. The bus was traveling at approximately 10 mph, and something about the scene immediately caught his attention.

Ahmed looked inside and saw that the driver appeared to be experiencing a medical emergency. Realizing that children were aboard a moving vehicle that was not under control, he sprinted toward the bus and climbed inside.

Surveillance footage captured the dramatic moment as Ahmed boarded the vehicle and attempted to stop it. Although he had never driven a school bus before, he focused on the controls and tried to put the vehicle into park. His first attempt accidentally sent the bus into reverse, but he quickly corrected the mistake, shifted into neutral and pulled the parking brake.

Once the bus stopped, Ahmed turned to check on the children. He recalled seeing frightened students, some crying and others preparing to call the police. Two girls seated near the front also helped him during the chaotic moments.

Ahmed said he had no medical training, but watching Grey’s Anatomy had taught him something he remembered in the emergency: the importance of staying calm and thinking clearly under pressure.

“In ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ you never see doctors panic,” he told CBS News, explaining that the show helped him focus rather than freeze.

Saint Paul Public Schools confirmed that 19 students from Battle Creek Middle School were aboard the bus. No students were injured, and another bus arrived to take them home. The driver was transported to a hospital and was later released to recover at home.

Despite the attention he has received, Ahmed has been modest about his actions. He said he felt it was his responsibility to help when he saw people in danger, adding that he believed others might have done the same in his position.

His story has since spread widely online, with many people praising his courage and quick decision-making. What began as an ordinary afternoon outside a neighborhood store became a moment that could have ended very differently — and a reminder that help can come from an unexpected passerby.
