Suspect Arrested After Off-Duty NYPD Officer Is Brutally Beaten During Bronx Robbery

An off-duty New York City police officer was left with a fractured skull and bleeding in his brain after a group of attackers allegedly ambushed and robbed him while he was out jogging in the Bronx. Days after the assault, police announced the arrest of an 18-year-old suspect believed to be connected to the attack and a series of other robberies across New York City.
The incident occurred on the morning of August 23, 2022, in the Unionport section of the Bronx. The officer, identified by law enforcement sources as 48-year-old Muhammed Chowdhury, was reportedly jogging near his home when several men approached him.
According to police, the attackers repeatedly struck Chowdhury in the head before stealing his cellphone, car keys and wallet. The suspects then fled in a black Honda sedan driven by a fourth individual.
Officer Found With Life-Threatening Injuries
Chowdhury suffered severe head injuries, including a fractured skull and bleeding in the brain. His condition was reported as critical following the attack.
The officer worked in Manhattan and had reportedly served with the NYPD for 18 years. His family expressed concern as he received treatment, describing the seriousness of his injuries and the difficult recovery ahead.
The circumstances of the assault shocked fellow officers and the wider community, particularly because Chowdhury was not working at the time and was simply out for a jog.
Eighteen-Year-Old Arrested in Connection With Robberies
On August 26, police announced the arrest of Oshawn Logan, 18, of the Bronx. He was charged with four counts of robbery, two counts of gang assault, two counts of assault, grand larceny and criminal possession of a weapon.
Investigators believed Logan was connected not only to the attack on Chowdhury but also to a broader pattern of robberies and assaults reported in New York City.
Police said the group allegedly used a recurring method in which several individuals approached a victim while another person waited in a vehicle to facilitate a quick getaway. A black sedan was reportedly linked to multiple incidents under investigation.
Authorities continued searching for the other suspects believed to have participated in the officer’s assault.
Investigation Into a Wider Crime Spree

Investigators were examining whether the suspects were responsible for numerous robberies and carjackings reported in the Bronx and Queens during August 2022. Police said the attack on Chowdhury was among a series of incidents they were working to connect through surveillance footage, witness accounts and other evidence.
Logan’s arrest was an important development in the investigation, but authorities continued seeking information about the other people involved. At the time, the investigation remained active, and the charges against Logan were allegations to be resolved through the court process.
The case highlighted the dangers of violent street robberies and the serious consequences that even a brief attack can have on victims and their families.
