Mysterious Drone Drops Cash on Strangers in Delaware — One Lucky Recipient Finds $100

A mysterious drone has been surprising strangers across Delaware by dropping rolls of cash from the sky, turning ordinary outings into unexpected moments of excitement.

The person behind the unusual project, known online as 302 CashCopter, is an anonymous Wilmington resident who works in information technology by day. In his spare time, he flies a drone around local communities, selecting unsuspecting people to receive small cash gifts.

Attached to each bundle is a business card bearing a simple message: “You caught today’s drop. Cash inside — it’s yours.”

From $1 to Unexpected Cash Gifts

The project began with small experiments involving just $1 before gradually increasing to $5, $10 and the usual $20 drop.

One memorable encounter involved Deserae Raphael and Dan Swezey, who were spending time at Wilmington’s Riverfront. When a drone lowered a rolled-up bundle nearby, Raphael was initially suspicious and hesitant to pick it up.

Swezey was more curious. When they opened the package, they discovered $100 inside.

The larger amount was part of a sponsored drop funded by someone who wanted to send the pair an encouraging message. The note read: “Tough times don’t last, but tough people do!”

A video shared on the project’s social media accounts captured their reaction as they waved toward the drone.

Why Is a Stranger Giving Away Money?

The anonymous operator told the Daily Mail that he started the initiative after Wilmington received a series of negative headlines and online discussions. He wanted to give residents a reason to smile and encourage people to spread kindness in their own communities.

He initially paid for the cash drops himself but later established a fund that allows members of the public to contribute toward future giveaways.

According to his estimates, he had distributed approximately $800 through around 30 drops since launching the project. These figures were reported by the operator and have not been independently audited.

The recipients are reportedly selected at random. Sometimes, the operator chooses someone wearing a particular color; on other occasions, a person who waves at the drone may receive a surprise.

Could the Cashcopter Spread Beyond Delaware?

The drops have mainly taken place in northern Delaware, including Wilmington, Newark and Dover. The operator hopes to expand farther across the state and potentially inspire people in other parts of the country to launch similar projects.

For now, the unusual sight of a drone delivering unexpected cash has left residents looking up and wondering whether they might be next.

What began as one person’s attempt to brighten a few strangers’ days has grown into a social-media attraction built around surprise, generosity and the reactions of people who never expected money to fall from the sky.
