Eight Fishermen Rescued After Drifting at Sea for Six Days

SUNDARBANS, Bangladesh — September 25, 2026 — Eight fishermen were rescued alive after their fishing boat drifted in the deep sea for six days when its engine broke down, Bangladesh authorities said.

Engine Failure Left Crew Stranded

The fishermen were fishing about 11 nautical miles south of Kokilmoni in the Sundarbans on September 19 when their boat’s engine suddenly failed. With no working engine, the vessel began drifting in the open sea.

The crew remained stranded for several days without being able to return to shore. Their situation changed on September 24, when the boat moved into an area with mobile phone coverage.

Emergency Call Leads to Rescue

One of the fishermen was able to call the boat’s owner at around 3 p.m. and explain that the crew had been stranded. The owner immediately contacted the Bangladesh Coast Guard’s Western Zone for assistance.

A rescue team from Coast Guard Station Kokilmoni was sent to the area. After locating the disabled fishing boat, rescuers brought all eight fishermen to safety along with their vessel.

All Eight Fishermen Found Alive

The fishermen were given first aid and food after being rescued. Officials said arrangements were being made to hand the fishermen and their boat back to the owner.

Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, media officer for the Bangladesh Coast Guard, confirmed the rescue and said the service would continue emergency operations to assist people facing danger at sea.

The successful rescue brought an end to six days of uncertainty for the fishermen and their families. The incident also highlighted how difficult it can be for fishing crews to seek help when they become stranded outside mobile-network coverage.
