Father of Four Mechanicville Children Files $400 Million Claim After Children’s Deaths

Brady Harmon, the father of four children who were killed in Mechanicville, New York, has filed a legal notice seeking $400 million in damages from several government, school and housing agencies he alleges failed to protect his children from years of abuse and neglect.

The notice of claim names the City of Mechanicville, Saratoga County, Mechanicville City School District, Ballston Spa Central School District and the Mechanicville Housing Authority. Harmon alleges negligence, civil-rights violations, wrongful death and other failures involving his four children.

The children were Harper Harmon, 13; Hudson Harmon, 11; and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn Harmon. Their mother, Sarah Myers, 44, and grandmother, Amy Steadman, 64, were also found dead in the Mechanicville apartment on June 23, 2026.

Police have said investigators believe the children died on June 10 after being poisoned, while one child also suffered a fatal sharp-force injury. Authorities said Myers and Steadman subsequently died by suicide. At the time of the initial investigation, police said there was no evidence that another person was involved.

Harmon’s legal filing argues that warning signs of abuse had existed for years and that multiple agencies failed to respond adequately. Among the allegations is a May 2024 incident at school, when the children became seriously ill and three were taken to Albany Medical Center. The filing says one child was administered Narcan after appearing to experience an opioid overdose.

The notice further alleges that Myers and Steadman repeatedly gave the children substances including Benadryl, melatonin and kratom, allegedly to control them or make them sick. These are allegations contained in Harmon’s legal filing and have not been adjudicated in court.

Harmon also alleges that agencies failed to provide him with important information about his children’s education, medical treatment and possible abuse. According to the filing, he had been involved in a prolonged custody dispute with Myers and had not seen the children since they left Utah for New York in 2019.

The legal notice says Harmon repeatedly requested welfare checks after June 10, before the children’s bodies were discovered on June 23. Police ultimately entered the apartment after a neighbor reported a strong odor coming from the residence.

Harmon’s attorneys say the $400 million figure is intended to reflect the scale of the alleged harm and preserve his legal rights, rather than representing money that has already been awarded. Under New York law, a notice of claim is generally required before certain lawsuits against public entities can proceed.

The agencies named in the filing had not immediately provided substantive responses to the allegations in the latest reports. The legal action is expected to develop further as Harmon’s attorneys continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths and the agencies’ prior involvement with the family.
