FATHER SWIMS INTO OPEN SEA TO SAVE HIS 9-YEAR-OLD SON — FIVE TEENAGERS HELP BRING THEM HOME ALIVE

A family outing on Ireland’s southern coast nearly ended in tragedy when a 9-year-old boy was swept out to sea on an inflatable, prompting his father to swim after him.

As the father struggled against the water, he became exhausted and was forced to cling to a mooring buoy to stay afloat.

What followed was a dramatic rescue involving five teenagers, an experienced canoeist and other people on the water.

Both father and son eventually reached shore safely.

A Summer Evening Turns Into an Emergency

The incident unfolded near Fountainstown and White Bay in County Cork on a Sunday evening in August 2020.

The boy had been using an inflatable when a strong current carried him away from shore.

Seeing his son drifting farther out, his father entered the water and attempted to swim towards him.

But the effort quickly became dangerous. As exhaustion set in, the man was forced to hold onto a moored channel buoy.

People on the beach heard his calls for help and raised the alarm.

Five Teenagers Respond to the Emergency

Five 16-year-olds — Richard McSweeney, Jamie Venner, Cillian Foster, Kate Horgan and Harry Pritchard — were fishing aboard a rigid inflatable boat near Roches Point.

The teenagers had a marine VHF radio and were monitoring the emergency channel when they became aware of the developing situation.

They immediately headed towards the scene.

Despite their young age, the group had experience on the water and understood the importance of marine safety procedures.

A Race to Reach Father and Son

Experienced canoeist Paddy Quinlan also responded to the emergency.

He helped bring the young boy back to shore before returning to assist with the father’s rescue.

Meanwhile, the teenagers reached the exhausted man, who had been holding onto the buoy for approximately 20 minutes after his attempt to swim out.

Working together, the people involved in the rescue helped ensure that both father and son were brought safely back to land.

Two Lives Saved

Crosshaven RNLI praised the teenagers for their awareness, preparation and response to the emergency.

Several members of the group also had family connections to the lifeboat service.

Both father and son escaped the incident without reported injuries.

The rescue served as another reminder of how quickly inflatable beach toys can become dangerous when strong currents or offshore winds carry them away from land.

An Ordinary Evening, an Extraordinary Response

For the father, the instinct to reach his son had placed him in danger too.

For the five teenagers, an ordinary fishing trip suddenly became an opportunity to help save two lives.

Their quick response, combined with the efforts of other rescuers, helped turn a frightening emergency into a safe homecoming.
