Firefighters Rescue Deer Trapped in Fence During New Jersey Storm
Firefighters responding to storm emergencies in New Jersey made an unexpected rescue over the weekend when they were called to help a young deer trapped in a metal fence.
The incident happened in Middletown Township as a nor’easter brought heavy rain, strong winds and flooding across the region. While crews were dealing with more typical storm-related emergencies, they received a call about a doe that had become caught between the bars of a fence.
Firefighters Quickly Came to the Deer’s Aid
Crews from the Old Village Fire Company and Middletown Township Fire Company No. 1 responded to the scene.
The deer was trapped tightly enough that simply pulling it free could have caused additional injuries. Firefighters therefore worked carefully to cut through the metal fence and release the animal.
To protect the deer from sparks and flying debris while the fence was being cut, firefighters placed a blanket over its head.

The Rescue Took About 15 Minutes
After firefighters removed the section of fence holding the animal, the doe was finally free. The entire rescue took approximately 15 minutes.
The deer was examined at the scene and showed no apparent injuries. Once released, it immediately ran toward the nearby woods.
The Middletown Township Fire Department later shared photographs of the rescue and joked that the deer had apparently had enough of the storm.
An Unusual Call During a Difficult Weekend
More than 100 firefighters were on standby in Monmouth County during the storm because of the difficult weather conditions. Crews were responding to problems including flooding, fallen trees and other hazards.
The unusual wildlife rescue provided a brief positive moment during a challenging weekend. It also showed that emergency crews sometimes have to respond to situations far beyond the calls they normally expect.
For the trapped deer, the outcome was simple: after a few minutes of careful work, it was back in the woods and safely away from the storm.
