Five-Month-Old Baby Rescued After Alleged Abduction at Ghana Market

A five-month-old baby has been rescued and reunited with his family in Ghana after he was allegedly taken from a market in Kumasi earlier this week, according to a report published Friday.

The baby, Akwasi Banahene, disappeared from the Asafo Market in Kumasi on September 20. His mother, Freda, was working as a food vendor at the market when the incident happened.

According to reports, the baby had been sleeping near his family’s stall at around 5 a.m. when he disappeared. Family members said an unfamiliar woman had been sitting nearby before the child went missing.

The family reported the disappearance to police, prompting authorities to circulate information about the missing child and begin searching for him.

The case later took an unexpected turn when police encountered a woman traveling with a baby in the Ejisu area. However, earlier reports showed that the first child found with a woman was not Akwasi, after the family later acknowledged that they had incorrectly identified that baby. Police subsequently released the parents and continued investigating the disappearance.

A report published by the Ghanaian Times on September 25 says investigators eventually located Akwasi in Ejisu. Police arrested a woman believed to be between 37 and 40 years old while she was allegedly attempting to leave the area with the infant.

According to the report, officers examined the baby and found him in good health. He was then reunited with his family.

The woman remains in police custody while investigators work to establish exactly what happened and determine any charges that may follow. The circumstances surrounding the child’s disappearance remain under investigation.

The latest report brings an end to several days of uncertainty for Akwasi’s family, who had appealed for help after the baby disappeared from the busy market.
