Elderly Florida Man Sentenced to 20 Days in Jail After Dumping His Injured Dog in a Dumpster

An 80-year-old Florida man has been sentenced to 20 days in jail after pleading guilty to charges related to abandoning his severely injured dog in a dumpster, a case that has sparked renewed concerns about animal cruelty and the responsibility people have toward their pets.
Victor Manuel Carrion-Flores, of Kissimmee, Florida, pleaded guilty on September 30, 2026, to felony aggravated animal cruelty and misdemeanor animal abandonment. A judge sentenced him to 20 days in jail and two years of probation, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.
Employee Heard a Dog Crying From Inside a Dumpster

The case began on March 7, 2026, when an employee taking out trash behind a business on Cypress Parkway in Kissimmee heard an animal crying from inside a dumpster.
When the worker investigated, they discovered a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier mix named Max. The dog was alive but suffering from severe injuries and was taken for veterinary treatment.
Unfortunately, Max’s injuries were too serious to overcome. Veterinary staff determined that he had a severe skull fracture, and he was humanely euthanized because of the extent of his condition. An examination later confirmed that he had suffered blunt force trauma, authorities said.
Surveillance Footage Helped Investigators Identify the Owner
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage from the business. According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, the video showed Carrion-Flores removing the dog from a pickup truck, placing him inside a box and leaving him in the dumpster.
During an interview with deputies, Carrion-Flores reportedly said he had found Max injured but had not sought veterinary care. Investigators said he told them he was too busy to deal with the situation and believed the dog would eventually die from his injuries.
Carrion-Flores denied causing the injuries, according to earlier reports. However, he later pleaded guilty to the charges connected to abandoning the injured animal.
Court Orders Include a Ban on Owning Animals
In addition to the 20-day jail sentence, Carrion-Flores received two years of probation. The court also prohibited him from possessing animals, required him to complete an eight-hour animal cruelty prevention course and ordered his placement on Florida’s animal cruelty registry.
He was also ordered to pay restitution to Osceola County Animal Services and the sheriff’s office.
The case has drawn attention to the importance of seeking immediate veterinary care when an animal is seriously injured. Even when the circumstances of an injury are unclear, leaving an animal without necessary treatment can have devastating consequences.
For Max, the discovery came too late to save his life. The case has since resulted in a criminal conviction and restrictions intended to prevent similar situations in the future.
