86-Year-Old Grandmother Killed While Trying to Save Her Dog After It Was Hit by a Car

An 86-year-old California woman lost her life in a heartbreaking accident while trying to help the dog she loved. Her final moments have left her family mourning a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose compassion extended to animals.
Mary Lu “Meeka” Wear, of Apple Valley, California, died on October 9, 2026, after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to rescue her dog, Benji, who had reportedly been hit by another car.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a pedestrian collision on Waalew Road, west of Dale Evans Parkway, at approximately 7:55 p.m.
Investigators said Wear was in the roadway trying to help her injured dog when she was struck by a Nissan Murano. She suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a 70-year-old woman from Apple Valley, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Authorities said drugs and alcohol were not factors in the collision. The investigation was ongoing, and officials had not confirmed whether Benji survived.
For Wear’s family, the tragedy was about far more than a traffic accident. She was remembered as a woman who brought warmth, kindness and love into the lives of those around her.
A memorial fundraising page described Wear as a beloved mother of seven, grandmother of four and great-grandmother of nine. Loved ones said she had gone outside to look after Benji when the fatal accident occurred.
“She was the heart of her family,” a loved one wrote in the tribute, recalling the lasting impact Wear had on friends and relatives.
Even in her final days, Wear had been helping her daughter and granddaughter prepare to open a restaurant in Fawnskin, California. Her family said her encouragement and presence were an important part of that project.
Now, those plans are overshadowed by the loss of a woman whose family says she was deeply devoted to the people and animals she loved.
Authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or has information about the incident to contact the Apple Valley Sheriff’s Station.
Wear’s death is a painful reminder of how quickly an ordinary moment can become a tragedy. For her loved ones, she will be remembered not only for the way she died, but for the years of care, generosity and affection she gave to her family.
