From Textile Engineering to the Cockpit: The Story of Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar
Indian pilot Smit Machchhar is receiving international attention after helping prevent a catastrophe aboard a flydubai flight on September 30, 2026. The captain was seriously injured during an attack in the cockpit but managed to open the cockpit door, allowing others on board to intervene.
Aviation Was Not His Childhood Dream
Machchhar did not originally plan to become a pilot. According to Reuters, he had initially expected to join his family’s textile business.
His plans changed when he attended an aviation seminar at the age of 19. That experience sparked his interest in flying, although his mother was initially worried about his decision to pursue the profession.
Building a Career in Aviation
Machchhar later trained in New Zealand before joining Indian airline SpiceJet. He spent 11 years with the airline and eventually became a line training captain, a role that included mentoring younger pilots.
He joined flydubai in 2022 and accumulated thousands of hours of flight experience during his career.

The Emergency Aboard Flight FZ1073
On September 30, Machchhar was captain of flydubai flight FZ1073, traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv with 174 people on board.
During the flight, his co-pilot allegedly attacked him and attempted to take control of the aircraft. The plane rapidly lost altitude before the situation was brought under control.
Despite being seriously injured, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door. Passengers and crew members then helped subdue the attacker, while two other pilots who were on board helped operate the aircraft.
An Emergency Landing in Saudi Arabia
The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. The passengers were able to continue their journey after the emergency.
Machchhar was taken to hospital in Saudi Arabia and underwent surgery. Reports on October 1 said he was in stable condition and was later transferred to Dubai for further treatment.
A Pilot Who Keeps Work and Family Life Separate
In interviews before the incident, Machchhar described aviation as something he preferred to leave behind when he finished work.
He once explained that when he leaves the cockpit, he wants to stop thinking about aviation and focus on his family instead. His comments offer a glimpse into the life of a pilot who spent much of his career responsible for the safety of others while keeping his professional identity separate from his personal life.
His Career Has Now Become Part of a Remarkable Story
Machchhar’s journey from a young man interested in his family’s textile business to an experienced airline captain has gained new attention following the incident.
The investigation into what happened aboard the flight remains ongoing. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the cockpit attack, while Machchhar continues his recovery in hospital.
