He Thought His Fiancée Was Leaving Him for Good—Until Her Sister Revealed That Abigail Had Secretly Signed Away His Ranch

Part 1: Opening
The night before their wedding, Abigail Turner asked Samuel Hayes to marry her sister instead.
Samuel thought she was joking.
They had spent two years planning their wedding. He had built a new bedroom onto his ranch house, saved enough money for a proper celebration, and even planted a row of roses outside the front porch because Abigail had once told him they were her favorite flowers.
Now she stood in front of him, pale and trembling, asking him to give everything to another woman.
“Marry Charlotte,” she whispered.
Samuel stared at her.
“Your sister?”
Abigail nodded.
“She’s a good woman. She’ll make you happy.”
“I’m not marrying your sister. I’m marrying you.”
Abigail looked down at the engagement ring on her finger.
“Then you must hate me.”
Samuel stepped closer, reaching for her hand.
“What’s happened?”
“Nothing.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
Her eyes filled with tears, but she quickly turned away.
“Please, Samuel. Just promise me you’ll do it.”
He pulled back.
“After everything we’ve been through, you expect me to stand at the altar tomorrow and marry someone else without knowing why?”
Abigail said nothing.
Then she removed her engagement ring and placed it on the table.
Samuel felt something inside him break.
“Is there another man?”
“No.”
“Have you stopped loving me?”
She closed her eyes.
“That’s not the question you should be asking.”
Before he could demand an explanation, a horse approached the house. A moment later, Charlotte entered through the front door.
She was younger than Abigail by three years, quieter, and rarely looked Samuel directly in the eyes. He had always thought she was simply shy.
Tonight, however, she looked terrified.
“Abigail,” Charlotte said, noticing the ring on the table. “You told him?”
Abigail shook her head.
“I couldn’t.”
Charlotte turned toward Samuel.
“You need to leave this alone.”
Samuel frowned.
“I’m standing in my own house. I think I deserve to know why my fiancée is asking me to marry her sister.”
Charlotte’s lips trembled.
“Because if you marry Abigail tomorrow, you’ll lose everything.”
Samuel let out a humorless laugh.
“Is that supposed to frighten me?”
“It isn’t a threat.”
Charlotte looked at her sister, then back at Samuel.
“Three weeks ago, Abigail went to see a doctor in Red Creek. She received news that changed everything. She hasn’t told you because she knows what you’ll do when you find out.”
Samuel turned toward Abigail.
“Is it true?”
Abigail wiped her eyes.
“Samuel, I wanted to tell you. I tried every day.”
“Tell me what?”
She took a shaky breath.
Then she placed a hand over her stomach.
Samuel went completely still.
But before he could speak, Charlotte stepped between them.
“There’s more,” she said. “And this is the part Abigail doesn’t know how to tell you.”
She reached into her coat and pulled out a small envelope.
Inside was a document bearing the seal of the county courthouse.
Samuel read the first line, then the second.
His face changed.
The document stated that the land beneath his ranch had been transferred into another person’s name six months earlier.
And the signature authorizing it belonged to Abigail.
Samuel looked at his fiancée in disbelief.
“Why would you do this?”
Abigail began to cry.
Charlotte lowered her voice.
“Because she was trying to save you from the man who owns that document.”
Samuel looked down at the final page.
There, beneath the official seal, was a name he had not seen in twenty years.
His father’s.
And suddenly, Samuel understood that Abigail’s request to marry her sister had nothing to do with falling out of love.
It had everything to do with a secret his family had kept from him—and a decision that might already be impossible to undo.
