HE VANISHED AT 11 DURING A FAMILY HOLIDAY — SIX YEARS LATER, A DELIVERY DRIVER FOUND HIM WALKING ALONE IN THE RAIN

In December 2023, a delivery driver travelling along a dark mountain road in southern France noticed a young man walking alone in the rain.

The teenager appeared tired and had no mobile phone. When the driver stopped to help, he had no idea he was about to uncover a missing-person mystery that had lasted six years.

The young man was Alex Batty, a British boy who had disappeared during a family holiday in Spain in 2017, when he was just 11 years old.

Now 17, Alex was trying to find his way back to his grandmother in England.

A Holiday That Became a Six-Year Disappearance

Alex left Greater Manchester on September 30, 2017, for a holiday in Spain with his mother, Melanie Batty, and grandfather, David Batty.

The trip was supposed to last approximately one week.

His grandmother, Susan Caruana, was his legal guardian and expected him to return to Britain on October 8.

But Alex never came home.

His disappearance prompted an international investigation. For years, his grandmother had no clear answers about where he was living or whether he was safe.

Years Spent Living Away From Ordinary Life

During the years he was missing, Alex travelled through parts of Spain, Morocco and France with his mother and grandfather.

He later described living a nomadic lifestyle, moving between temporary accommodation and communities pursuing alternative ways of living.

He had little access to formal education and spent much of his adolescence away from the ordinary routines of school and home.

Eventually, Alex began wanting a different future.

When his mother planned another move, he decided it was time to leave and find a way back to Britain.

Four Days Walking Through the Mountains

Alex set out on foot through the foothills of the Pyrenees in southwestern France.

According to accounts given after his discovery, he walked for several days, often travelling at night.

He carried a skateboard, had limited money and did not have a working mobile phone.

His goal was to reach a large city where he could seek help returning to the United Kingdom.

But before he reached his destination, someone noticed him.

A Delivery Driver Stops on a Dark Road

At approximately 3 a.m. on December 13, 2023, delivery driver Fabien Accidini spotted Alex walking beside an unlit road.

Fabien was delivering medicines to pharmacies when he stopped to offer assistance.

As they talked, Alex explained that he had been missing for years and wanted to return to his grandmother.

Fabien searched his name online and discovered reports about the missing British child.

He then helped Alex contact his grandmother through Facebook and alerted French authorities.

The Message His Grandmother Had Waited Six Years to Receive

Alex sent his grandmother a short message identifying himself, explaining that he was in Toulouse and telling her he loved her and wanted to come home.

For Susan Caruana, who had spent six years hoping for news of her grandson, the discovery brought enormous relief.

French authorities assisted Alex, and Greater Manchester Police formally confirmed his identity.

He returned to Britain in December 2023, finally reuniting with his grandmother after six years apart.

His disappearance and the circumstances surrounding it remained matters for investigation, but the most important news for his family was that Alex had been found alive.

What began with a stranger noticing a teenager on a rainy mountain road had ended a six-year search.
