Kansas Soccer Field Tragedy: Mother Released After Pickup Truck Kills Boy, 6, and Man, 35

A mother whose pickup truck drove onto a youth soccer field in Wichita, Kansas, killing a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, has been released without charges as investigators continue examining what happened.

The incident occurred on October 17, 2026, at the Stryker Sports Complex. Families had gathered to watch a youth soccer match when a Chevrolet pickup truck entered the field and struck multiple children and adults.

Police identified the victims as Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, both from McPherson, Kansas. The two were not related.

Ten people were taken to local hospitals with injuries, including several children. Authorities also reported that a woman experienced a medical complication unrelated to traumatic injuries.

The driver, a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, was initially detained at the scene. Two of her children were inside the pickup, while another child was playing soccer on a different field at the complex.

After interviewing the driver and consulting with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office, police released her without filing charges. Investigators said they were awaiting toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the vehicle before determining the next steps.

The decision prompted questions from members of the public, but Wichita police emphasized that the investigation remained active and that the release did not represent a final determination about possible criminal charges.

Authorities have not established publicly whether the truck entered the field intentionally or what caused the incident. Police have urged people to avoid speculation and rely on verified information while investigators continue their work.

The tragedy has devastated the local soccer community. Cole’s father paid tribute to his son at his funeral, remembering him as a joyful child who found happiness in everyday moments. The community has also honored Nicholas Schafer, a soccer coach and middle-school teacher.

For the families affected, the investigation continues as they mourn two lives lost during what should have been an ordinary afternoon of youth sports.
