Kasey Parkinson Catches Record-Breaking 4.4-Foot Murray Cod in South Australia
Fisherman Catches Record-Breaking 4.4-Foot Fish — and What He Did Next Made the Moment Even More Special

A solo fishing trip turned into an unforgettable adventure for an Australian angler after he hooked a massive fish so large it barely fit inside his landing net.
Kasey Parkinson, a fisherman from South Australia, was out on the Murray River when he landed an enormous Murray cod measuring 1,355 millimeters, or approximately 4.4 feet long. The extraordinary catch was later recognized by the Australian National Sportfishing Association (ANSA) as a new state and national length record.
For Parkinson, the moment was the culmination of years of fishing experience — and a catch he never expected to make alone.
The Moment Everything Changed
Parkinson had been enjoying several successful days on the water when he decided to head out early one morning, before sunrise.
By around 9 a.m., he had already caught a sizable fish. Then another one struck his lure, and the struggle began.
The giant cod hit a Bassman SiliJig lure with such force that Parkinson said it nearly pulled the fishing rod straight out of his hands.
At first, he did not realize just how enormous the fish was. Its true size only became apparent when it approached the boat.
Getting the fish into the net proved to be another challenge. Parkinson was fishing alone, and the cod was so large that it barely fit inside.
When he finally secured the catch, his excitement was unmistakable.
He later described himself as being “over the moon” about the achievement.
A Measurement He Will Never Forget
After bringing the fish aboard, Parkinson quickly measured it and took photographs to document the catch.
The initial measurement reached approximately 1,370 millimeters. However, the fish slipped on the measuring mat during the photography session, and the official record length was recorded at 1,355 millimeters.
Even at that measurement, the cod surpassed his previous personal best of around 1,300 millimeters.
The catch was subsequently recognized as a state and national length record, turning an already remarkable fishing trip into a milestone in Parkinson’s angling career.
The Decision That Made the Catch Even More Memorable
Despite the excitement surrounding the record, Parkinson did not keep the fish.
After taking photographs and documenting its size, he returned the enormous cod to the water and watched it swim away.
For many anglers, catching a fish of this size would be a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. For Parkinson, the experience was made even more memorable by the fact that he had managed the entire encounter on his own.
He later shared his excitement online, explaining that the catch had far exceeded his previous personal record and was something he would never forget.
A Remarkable Encounter on the Murray River
Murray cod are among Australia’s best-known freshwater fish, and large specimens are highly prized by recreational anglers.
Parkinson’s record-setting catch highlights both the appeal of fishing the Murray River and the unpredictability of the sport. Even experienced fishermen cannot know when an ordinary morning on the water might produce an extraordinary encounter.
For Parkinson, the experience began with an early start and a fishing rod in his hands. It ended with a record-breaking catch, photographs of a giant fish and a memory that will stay with him for years.
And perhaps the most remarkable detail is that, after landing one of the biggest fish of his life, he let it return to the river.
