Kings Canyon Unified’s Success With English Learners Draws Statewide Attention
FRESNO, California — September 19, 2026

Kings Canyon Unified School District’s academic gains among English learners are drawing attention from education researchers across California.

The Central Valley district is now being studied by the Learning Policy Institute, a national education research organization, as researchers look at the strategies that may be contributing to improved student performance.

Strong Academic Gains
According to district officials, about 55% of Kings Canyon Unified students are current or former English learners.

Despite that large population, the district recorded significant gains last year. Assessment scores increased by 4.25 percentage points in mathematics and 4.69 percentage points in English language arts.

The improvements pushed the district above its pre-pandemic performance levels in both subjects for the first time.

Researchers Study District’s Approach
The Learning Policy Institute identified Kings Canyon Unified after reviewing data from school districts across California.

Thirteen districts were initially identified for their performance among English learners. Kings Canyon was ultimately selected as one of three districts for a more detailed case study.

Researcher Amaya Garcia recently visited three campuses, including Navelencia Middle School, to observe classroom practices and speak with educators.

Garcia said researchers were particularly interested in the district’s approach to supporting students and how educators use student data to guide instruction and intervention.

Focus on Student Potential
Researchers observed what Garcia described as an asset-oriented mindset among district leaders and teachers.

Educators emphasized that students can succeed regardless of their circumstances or background.

Teachers also use student performance data to identify areas where additional support may be needed. Classroom strategies can include pairing students who need additional help with classmates who are performing strongly, creating opportunities for peer learning.

The district also has a formal English Learner Master Plan designed to provide consistent instructional strategies and educational programs for English learners.

Study Expected in 2027
Researchers say the district’s progress may involve more than individual classroom techniques.

The ongoing study is examining leadership, school culture, educational programs and the district’s overall approach to supporting students.

The Learning Policy Institute expects to publish its findings in early 2027. Researchers hope the results could provide lessons for other school districts seeking to improve outcomes for English learners.
