A major new statement has put the Madeleine McCann investigation back under intense scrutiny after Christian Brueckner, the principal suspect identified by German authorities, publicly acknowledged that he was extremely close to the Praia da Luz resort on the night Madeleine disappeared in May 2007.

Brueckner now says he was roughly 150 yards from the McCann family’s holiday apartment, claiming he was on a nearby beach selling drugs. According to his account, he had travelled from Spain carrying marijuana into Portugal and had kept quiet about his exact whereabouts because he believed investigators were trying to implicate him in Madeleine’s disappearance.

Even more striking, Brueckner claims Portuguese police stopped him three separate times that same night while officers were searching for Madeleine. He says the officers did not search his vehicle and allowed him to continue. Those claims are his own account and have not been established as proof that he had any role in Madeleine’s disappearance.

The admission is significant because investigators had already placed a cellphone associated with Brueckner in the Praia da Luz area around the time Madeleine vanished. German authorities have treated him as their main suspect for years, but he has never been formally charged in the McCann case and continues to deny involvement.

The development comes as Brueckner is also reportedly preparing a book in which he intends to present his version of events and argue that he is innocent. He was released from prison in Germany in September 2025 after completing a sentence for an unrelated rape conviction.

The central question is now sharper than before: why did Brueckner wait nearly two decades to publicly place himself so close to the resort on the exact night Madeleine disappeared? His explanation may eventually be compared against phone records, witness accounts and earlier police evidence, but at this stage it remains an unverified account rather than a new forensic breakthrough.

Madeleine’s disappearance remains unsolved, and prosecutors have said they still lack sufficient evidence to charge Brueckner. His new statement does not establish guilt — but it introduces a major new detail about his claimed movements on one of the most scrutinized nights in modern missing-person history.
