Utah Mother and 11-Year-Old Daughter Found Dead in Las Vegas Hotel Room

A Utah mother and her 11-year-old daughter were found dead inside a Las Vegas hotel room earlier this year after traveling to Nevada for the child’s cheerleading competition, according to an investigative report.

Tawnia McGeehan, 34, and her daughter, Addilyn Smith, 11, were discovered dead in a Las Vegas hotel room in February 2026.

The mother and daughter had traveled from Utah to Las Vegas for one of Addilyn’s cheerleading competitions. Their trip ended in tragedy when police were called to the hotel and found both of them deceased.

Investigators discovered several handwritten notes inside the room. One of the notes reportedly instructed anyone who entered the room to call 911.

Toxicology testing later found multiple substances in both McGeehan and Addilyn’s systems, including quetiapine, gabapentin, lorazepam and diphenhydramine. Additional substances were detected in McGeehan’s system alone.

Despite the presence of multiple drugs, investigators determined that the substances were not the cause of death.

According to the released investigative report, both mother and daughter died from gunshot wounds.

Investigators concluded that McGeehan shot her daughter before taking her own life, classifying the deaths as a murder-suicide.

The case has drawn attention in part because of the circumstances surrounding the family’s trip. What was supposed to be a trip to Las Vegas for an 11-year-old girl’s cheerleading competition ended with the deaths of both mother and daughter.

The investigative findings provide a clearer picture of what happened inside the hotel room, while also highlighting the devastating circumstances surrounding Addilyn’s death at just 11 years old.
