Man Arrested Nearly 10 Years After 2016 Murder as Witness Alleges He Confessed to the Killing

Man Arrested Nearly 10 Years After 2016 Murder, After Witness Allegedly Reveals Confession

A cold case in rural West Virginia has taken a major turn after a 65-year-old man was arrested nearly a decade after a 25-year-old man was found dead in a remote wooded area.

Richard William Nichols was arrested in Indiana on September 2 and charged with first-degree murder in the death of Ivan “Vanya” Perlis, according to PEOPLE and local media reports.

Perlis’ remains were discovered by a hunter on November 12, 2016, near Brushy Ridge Road in the Dolly Sods area of West Virginia. Investigators determined that his skull had three gunshot wounds to the back of the head. The medical examiner concluded that he likely died between October 3 and October 5, 2016.

According to the criminal complaint, Nichols became a suspect early in the investigation after authorities learned that the two men had argued over a bandana that belonged to a deceased friend. Both men had been staying on the same property before Perlis disappeared.

Investigators said Nichols acknowledged having an altercation with Perlis but claimed the two had later made peace. Over time, however, he reportedly gave investigators different accounts of the last time he saw Perlis, including claims that another man had taken Perlis away in a vehicle.

A key development came from a witness, Lester Mook, who allegedly told investigators that Nichols and Perlis had left the property together in Nichols’ truck on the day Perlis disappeared. Mook said Nichols returned alone several hours later.

In a later interview, Mook reportedly told investigators that Nichols had returned wearing different clothes and said his previous clothing was covered in blood. In December 2024, Mook allegedly told investigators that Nichols had directly confessed to killing Perlis, saying he had shot him three times and needed to burn his bloodstained clothes.

Authorities cited the witness statements and Nichols’ own account of driving Perlis to the area as part of the basis for the arrest. Nichols is being held without bond at a regional jail in West Virginia.

The arrest marks a significant development in a case that remained unresolved for years. The allegations have yet to be tested at trial, and Nichols is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
