Man Rescued After Climbing Onto Cathedral Altar in the Philippines

Bacolod City, Philippines — September 28, 2026

A man was safely rescued after spending several hours on an elevated structure behind the altar of San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod City, Philippines, prompting a lengthy operation involving police, firefighters and emergency responders.

Man Climbs Onto Cathedral Structure

The incident happened on Saturday, September 26, when the man entered the cathedral at around 4 p.m. and climbed onto the elevated altar area.

The scheduled 5:15 p.m. Mass was moved outside the cathedral while authorities secured the area and worked to bring the man down safely.

Responders Spend Hours Negotiating

Police and firefighters spent several hours communicating with the man and attempting to persuade him to come down.

Responders also placed an inflatable safety cushion below the elevated structure as a precaution. A lifeline was later installed as part of the rescue operation.

According to local reports, the man repeatedly signaled for responders to stay away and did not respond to most of their questions.

Safe Rescue After More Than Four Hours

At approximately 9:13 p.m., the man jumped from the elevated structure and landed on the inflatable cushion.

Emergency medical personnel immediately attended to him. Reports said he suffered minor cuts and abrasions and was subsequently taken to Police Station 1.

Authorities Continue Their Inquiry

Police identified the man only as Alvin. Authorities said he was reportedly a frequent visitor to the cathedral and was often seen praying there.

Local police said the circumstances that led to the incident remained unclear. Authorities were also working to determine his residence and contact his family.

The rescue involved the Bacolod City Police Office, Bureau of Fire Protection, the city’s disaster risk reduction office and several volunteer emergency organizations.
