British Climber Dies After 60-Metre Fall on Spanish Mountain

Picos de Europa, Spain — September 25, 2026

A 28-year-old British climber has died after falling approximately 60 metres while descending one of northern Spain’s highest mountains, Spanish authorities said.

Fall Near the Summit

The climber fell into a vertical gully on the eastern side of Torrecerredo in the Picos de Europa mountain range on Thursday. According to the Spanish Civil Guard, he was approximately 20 metres from the summit when the accident happened.

Emergency services received a call shortly after 1:20 p.m. local time. A medical helicopter was sent to the area, and a doctor confirmed the climber had died at the scene.

Mountain Rescue Operation

Recovering the body was difficult because of the steep and exposed terrain. Mountain rescue specialists were lowered by winch from a Civil Guard helicopter to reach the location.

The rescuers recovered the man’s body and personal belongings before transporting him to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Asturias for forensic examination.

The climber’s identity has not been publicly released. Spanish authorities identified him as an English national, while the UK Foreign Office said it was in contact with local authorities following reports of the death of a British national in Spain.

A Challenging Mountain Route

Torrecerredo rises to approximately 2,650 metres and is the highest peak in the Cantabrian Mountains. The mountain is located within the Picos de Europa, a popular destination for climbers and hikers.

Local tourism authorities describe the route as very difficult, with steep and exposed sections that require particular care, especially during the descent.

Another Climber Injured

The same mountain region saw another incident on Thursday. Spanish emergency services transported a 54-year-old French woman to hospital after she suffered a leg injury while in the Picos de Europa.

Authorities continue to remind visitors that changing mountain conditions and exposed terrain can make seemingly short sections of a route particularly dangerous.
