Minnesota Man Sentenced to 14 Months for Assaulting Rep. Ilhan Omar
A Minnesota man who sprayed Democratic U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar with a mixture containing vinegar during a town hall meeting in Minneapolis has been sentenced to 14 months in federal prison.
Anthony Kazmierczak, 56, received the sentence after pleading guilty to assaulting a federal official. He was also ordered to serve three years of supervised release, including a condition prohibiting contact with Omar.
Attack During Minneapolis Town Hall
The incident took place on January 27, 2026, during a public town hall meeting in Minneapolis. Kazmierczak reportedly stood up from the audience and sprayed liquid from a syringe toward Omar, while shouting that she was “splitting Minnesota apart.”
Security personnel quickly intervened, taking him to the ground before handing him over to police. Omar was not physically injured and continued participating in the event after the incident.
Authorities later determined that the substance was a mixture of water and apple cider vinegar. The attack occurred during a period of heightened tensions in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area, where immigration enforcement operations had triggered protests and public unrest.
Judge Highlights Premeditation
During the sentencing hearing, U.S. District Judge Joan N. Ericksen emphasized that the attack was not simply an impulsive act. She noted that Kazmierczak had obtained tickets to the town hall weeks before the incident.
Prosecutors also pointed to text messages indicating that he had discussed doing something at the event involving Omar. Other messages reportedly included arrangements for his dog and inquiries about bail bond services.
Kazmierczak apologized for his actions in court and acknowledged the fear he had caused. His defense attorney argued that his mental health struggles and failure to take prescribed medication before the attack contributed to his behavior.
Political Tensions Surround the Case
The assault occurred against a backdrop of heightened political tensions surrounding immigration policy and Omar’s public positions. The Minnesota congresswoman has been a frequent target of hostile political rhetoric, including statements by President Donald Trump.
Authorities have treated the incident as an assault on a federal official, while the sentencing has renewed discussions about threats against elected representatives and the safety of public officials at community events.
The 14-month prison sentence marks the latest development in the case. Kazmierczak will also remain subject to supervised release and restrictions on contacting Omar after completing his prison term.
