Mother Named as Suspect After Five-Year-Old Boy Dies in Blue Mountains Stabbin
A five-year-old boy has died and two of his younger siblings are in critical condition following a stabbing incident in Valley Heights, in Sydney’s Blue Mountains, on Sunday.
Emergency services were called to Waratah Road, near Springwood, at around 1pm after members of the public discovered three children and a 42-year-old woman inside a parked car. The five-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene, while his two siblings and their mother were found with stab wounds.
The two surviving children, both under five, and the woman were taken to hospital and underwent surgery. They remain in critical condition, according to police.
NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Peter McKenna confirmed that the woman is the mother of all three children and is being treated as a suspect in the alleged domestic violence-related incident. Police have said her injuries are believed to have been self-inflicted. She has not been charged.
Police said the family was found in what appeared to be a random location and that the investigation remains in its early stages. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive, and the woman was reportedly not previously known to police. The father of the children has been contacted and is supporting the two surviving children in hospital.
The incident came amid several other alleged domestic violence-related deaths across New South Wales over the weekend. Police said women aged 90, 23 and 70 died in separate incidents in Bondi Beach, Kooringal and the Northern Tablelands region. A 31-year-old man has been charged over the death of the 23-year-old woman in Kooringal.
Deputy Commissioner McKenna described the weekend as an exceptionally difficult period for communities across the state and urged people with concerns about domestic or family violence to report them to authorities.
