North Carolina Father Charged With Murder After Wife Is Fatally Shot at Home While Their Children Were Inside

A North Carolina man was charged with murder after his wife was found fatally shot inside their family home, where several of their four children were reportedly present when the incident occurred.

Derik Thomas Trocke, 39, was arrested after the fatal shooting of his wife, Annalene Julia Trocke, also 39, at their residence in Mooresville, North Carolina, on Sunday, January 15, 2023, according to the Mooresville Police Department.

Police said officers received a call at approximately 5:15 p.m. from a person reporting that he had shot his wife at the residence. When officers arrived, they found Annalene dead from a gunshot wound.

Detectives began investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, collecting evidence and interviewing the suspect before filing a murder charge, police said.

The couple had four children, and several were reportedly inside the house when the shooting occurred. According to local broadcaster WBTV, police confirmed that all four children were inside but did not witness the shooting. The children were not injured and were placed with family members.

The incident left neighbors shocked by the tragedy. One neighbor told local media that the family had four children and asked the community to keep them in their thoughts as they faced the aftermath of the loss.

Trocke was being held without bond at the Iredell County Detention Center following his arrest. He made his first court appearance on January 17, 2023, and a court-appointed attorney was assigned to represent him after he said he could not afford one.

The case prompted renewed attention to the impact of domestic violence on families, particularly children who may be left to cope with the sudden loss of a parent.

The murder charge is an allegation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
