Nurse Rushes Into Burning Hospital Nursery and Saves Newborn in Just 8 Seconds — But Her Heartbreak Doesn’t End There

A nurse in Pakistan has shared the heartbreaking story of how she risked her life to rescue a newborn baby from a hospital nursery engulfed in flames, in a dramatic moment captured by security cameras.

Razia Noreen was working at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad when a fire broke out in a nursery caring for 15 newborn babies.

Her immediate response saved one tiny life. But the tragedy that followed left her struggling with the loss of the other children she desperately tried to reach.

An Ordinary Hospital Shift Turns Into a Nightmare

Noreen and her colleagues had just checked on the newborns and were preparing injections in an adjacent room when she noticed flames.

Realizing that the babies were in immediate danger, she dropped what she was holding and rushed toward the nursery.

Thick smoke was already spreading through the room, leaving little time to act.

Eight Seconds That Saved a Baby’s Life

Without hesitation, Noreen entered the burning nursery, picked up a newborn and pressed the infant against her chest to protect the child from the spreading fire.

Security camera footage captured her emerging from the room just eight seconds later.

She immediately handed the baby to a doctor nearby.

But instead of moving to safety, the nurse turned around and attempted to return for the other children.

She Tried to Go Back for the Others

By then, the nursery was rapidly filling with smoke, making visibility almost impossible.

Noreen and another nurse lowered themselves to the floor, where the smoke was thinner, and attempted to crawl through the doorway.

She continued trying to move forward despite struggling to breathe, but the flames eventually forced her back.

Fourteen newborns died in the devastating fire.

When Noreen learned what had happened, she was overwhelmed by the news.

A Survivor Carrying an Unimaginable Loss

Speaking to The Associated Press in her first interview with international media, Noreen described her desperate attempt to save the babies.

Although she successfully rescued one child, she continued to think about those she could not reach.

Her experience reflects the extraordinary emotional burden that healthcare workers can face when a disaster unfolds in a place dedicated to protecting vulnerable lives.

One Tiny Life Saved Amid a Devastating Tragedy

The security footage documents a remarkable act of courage: a nurse running toward danger, shielding a newborn with her own body and delivering the child into the arms of another medical professional.

Yet Noreen’s story is not simply about a dramatic rescue. It is also about grief, responsibility and the lasting emotional consequences of a tragedy that claimed 14 young lives.

For the baby she carried to safety, those eight seconds made a life-changing difference.

For Noreen, the memory of the children she could not save remains an enduring part of that day.
