Pennsylvania Man Charged After Boss Is Found Fatally Stabbed at Work Amid Complaints About Low Hours

A 63-year-old Pennsylvania man is facing a first-degree murder charge after his boss was found fatally stabbed inside an auto parts store. Investigators say coworkers reported that the man had complained about receiving too few work hours and struggling to pay his rent in the days before the killing.
The victim, Mary Kelly, 57, managed the Factory Motor Parts business on Bobali Drive in Swatara Township, near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Her death was discovered on the morning of October 20, 2026, after two employees arrived for work and noticed signs of a violent incident.
Employees Find Blood Leading to Their Boss’s Office
According to court documents cited by local news outlets, the employees noticed spilled coffee, damage to a wall and a trail of blood leading toward Kelly’s office.
One employee looked through an office window and saw Kelly lying on the floor. The workers left the area and contacted emergency services.
Responding officers found Kelly dead with apparent stab wounds to her head and neck, according to investigators.
Police subsequently followed a trail of bloody footprints toward a nearby warehouse. There, officers reportedly discovered two blood-covered kitchen-style knives and what appeared to be hair inside a trash can.
Surveillance Footage Points Investigators Toward a Suspect
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage showing Kelly arriving at the business before a red SUV appeared shortly afterward. According to the affidavit described in media reports, a man associated with the vehicle entered the building and left before the other employees arrived.
Coworkers identified Clifton Emerson Sr., 63, as an employee who drove a vehicle matching the one shown in the footage. Emerson had reportedly worked at the business for approximately four years.
Employees also told investigators that Emerson had complained during the preceding week about not receiving enough working hours and lacking the money to pay his rent.
Those reported complaints formed part of the investigative account, but authorities have not established publicly that they were the motive for the killing.
A Colleague Remembered as a Beloved Family Member
Kelly’s death left her family and coworkers grieving. Her older sister, Pamela Vison, told CBS 21 that the two spoke every day and that she became worried when Kelly stopped answering her calls.
Vison described her sister as gentle and lighthearted, saying Kelly had worked hard to keep their family connected after their parents died.
Factory Motor Parts also issued a statement expressing heartbreak over Kelly’s death and describing her as a dedicated employee who meant a great deal to those who worked alongside her. The company said it was cooperating with law enforcement.
Suspect Faces First-Degree Murder Charge

Maryland State Police arrested Emerson on October 20 in connection with the case. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, according to court records and reports cited by PEOPLE and regional news outlets.
Pennsylvania’s Megan’s Law registry lists Emerson as a registered sex offender since 2015 and records previous convictions for sex-related offenses.
As of the reports published October 21 and 22, it was not immediately clear whether Emerson had been arraigned. The investigation remains ongoing, and the murder allegation has not been proven in court.
