South African Man Appears in Court After DNA Links Him to 16 Alleged Rapes

A 46-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting 16 women in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province has appeared in court after investigators allegedly linked him to the cases through DNA evidence.

The suspect appeared before the Durban Magistrates’ Court on September 21. He faces multiple charges, including rape, housebreaking and attempted murder.

Alleged Attacks Spanned More Than a Decade
Police said the alleged offences occurred between 2014 and 2025.

Fourteen of the alleged rape cases were recorded in Cato Manor, while the other two were reported in Plessislaer and Taylor’s Halt. Investigators said the cases showed similarities in the alleged method of operation.

According to police, the suspect allegedly targeted women at night, in some cases following them home after they left taverns. Authorities also allege that some victims were attacked inside their homes.

DNA Evidence Helped Investigators
The investigation was conducted by specialised teams from South Africa’s Serial and Electronic Crime Investigation Unit and the Investigative Psychology Unit.

Police said investigators compared the alleged pattern of the attacks and used DNA evidence to establish links between the suspect and the cases.

Authorities have not publicly detailed how the DNA evidence was obtained or whether investigators believe there could be additional victims.

Suspect Remains in Custody
The suspect cannot currently be identified publicly, according to eNCA, while authorities continue the legal process.

His case was postponed until September 28, and he remains in custody at Westville Correctional Centre.

The allegations have not been proven in court, and the suspect remains presumed innocent unless convicted.

Investigation Continues
KwaZulu-Natal authorities said investigators would continue examining links between the suspect and other cases.

The court proceedings come as South Africa faces renewed public concern over violence against women. Officials said the investigation demonstrates the importance of forensic evidence and specialised police work in identifying suspects in long-running cases.

Authorities have not said whether further charges will be filed.
