The Call He Ignored PART 3 — THE WIFE WHO STOPPED WAITING

The Call He Ignored
PART 3 — THE WIFE WHO STOPPED WAITING
At 6:40 the following morning, Elena finally opened her eyes.
Her vision was blurry.
The ceiling was unfamiliar, and the steady beeping beside her made her realize she was in a hospital.
Then she heard a familiar voice.
“Elena?”
Victor immediately stood.
“Sweetheart, can you hear me?”
She slowly turned her head.
Victor looked terrible.
His shirt was wrinkled, his hair disheveled, and dark circles surrounded his eyes.
For a moment, she simply stared at him.
Then she whispered, “Why are you here?”
Victor’s expression crumbled.
“Because you almost died.”
She looked away.
“I’m sorry I disturbed your dinner.”
He froze.
“Elena…”
“I know you were busy.”
“Please don’t.”
She closed her eyes.
“I called four times, Victor.”
He sat beside her.
“I know.”
“Someone answered.”
His jaw tightened.
“I know that too.”
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“She told me you didn’t want to talk to me.”
Victor took her hand.
“I’m sorry. I swear I didn’t know what was happening.”
Elena slowly pulled her hand away.
“But you didn’t answer.”
He had no defense.
“I know.”
“You didn’t even call back.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I was wrong.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Elena looked at him.
“Victor, I was lying on the kitchen floor, unable to breathe. I wasn’t thinking about our marriage. I wasn’t thinking about Selena. I was just scared.”
Her voice trembled.
“I thought I was going to die without hearing your voice one last time.”
Victor lowered his head.
“Please forgive me.”
She looked at the ceiling.
“I don’t know if I can.”
Those six words hurt him more than any business defeat he had ever experienced.
The doctor entered shortly afterward and explained that Elena’s condition was stable but required further treatment and observation.
He also recommended reducing her stress and arranging proper follow-up care.
After the doctor left, Victor immediately called his assistant.
“Cancel every meeting this week.”
“Sir, you have the Singapore acquisition meeting and—”
“Cancel them.”
“Understood.”
“And find out whether Selena has been using my company accounts, hotel privileges, or private credit cards.”
There was a brief silence.
“Is there a problem, sir?”
“I’ll explain later.”
He ended the call.
Elena heard everything but said nothing.
Later that afternoon, Margaret returned with fresh clothes and a small bag.
She looked at Victor.
“You should go home and rest.”
Victor shook his head.
“I’m staying.”
Margaret didn’t argue.
But when she approached Elena, her daughter quietly whispered something.
“Mom, can you bring my documents tomorrow?”
“Which documents?”
“My passport. My personal bank records. And the blue folder in my bedroom.”
Margaret understood immediately.
She glanced at Victor, who was standing near the window.
Then she nodded.
“Of course, sweetheart.”
Victor turned around.
“What documents?”
Elena looked at him calmly.
“Mine.”
He frowned.
“Elena, we need to talk about what happened.”
“We will.”
“When you’re feeling better, I’ll take you home.”
She shook her head.
“I don’t think I’ll be coming home with you.”
Victor stared at her.
“What do you mean?”
Elena looked down at her wedding ring.
For seven years, she had worn it proudly.
She had defended Victor when his family criticized him. She had waited through countless lonely evenings and forgiven promises that were never kept.
But something had changed on that marble floor.
She had realized that loving someone didn’t guarantee they would be there when she needed them.
“I want a divorce, Victor.”
He went completely still.
“No.”
She looked at him.
“You don’t get to decide that.”
“I’m your husband.”
“And I was your wife when I called you four times.”
He stepped closer.
“I’ll change. I’ll fix everything. Selena is out of my life. I’ll give you whatever you need.”
Elena’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained steady.
“I didn’t need your money. I needed you.”
Victor couldn’t answer.
At that moment, his phone vibrated.
His assistant had sent a message.
Assistant: Sir, I reviewed the hotel records and expense accounts you requested. There is something you should see immediately. Ms. Vale has been using your private corporate account for months. She also appears to have arranged something under your name without authorization.
A second message arrived.
It contained a photograph of a document.
Victor opened it.
His face turned pale.
It was a reservation confirmation for a private penthouse suite at one of his hotels.
The reservation included Selena Vale’s name.
But the person listed as the second guest was not Victor.
It was another man.
And the reservation had been paid for using Victor’s personal account.
He slowly looked toward Elena.
She was watching him.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
Victor couldn’t speak for several seconds.
Then Elena said quietly:
“Now you understand why I stopped asking questions.”
She turned toward the window.
“Victor, there’s something else you don’t know about me.”
He stared at her.
“What?”
Elena took a slow breath.
“For the last three years, I’ve been quietly building something of my own. Something completely separate from your money and your company.”
She looked directly into his eyes.
“And tomorrow, my lawyer will explain exactly what belongs to me.”
Victor felt another wave of dread.
He had spent seven years believing Elena needed him for everything.
But the woman lying in that hospital bed had just made him realize something terrifying.
He might be the only person in their marriage who had never understood how much she was worth.
